Eggplant (Solanum melongena) is an annual seasonal vegetable. Besides India, Indonesia is believed to be the origin of eggplant. This plant is often found growing wild in our forests. However, at this time the eggplant is grown extensively in various parts of the world.
There are many kinds of eggplant grown in Indonesia, ranging from local eggplant like eggplant, eggplant kopek, eggplant bogor, eggplant to imported eggplant like Japanese eggplant. The ideal soil condition for eggplant cultivation is sandy clay soil with a pH range of 6.5-7. Eggplant produces maximum in the temperature range 22-30oC. This plant needs enough sunlight, therefore it is suitable to be planted during the dry season.
