Here is a perfect explanation for the stuff.
The hotspot technology is technology used in cricket by the third umpire and helps to detect that the fielder that catches the ball after passing batsman bat has touch it or not.
The technology works in this way when ball touches bat at that time there is some amount of friction between bat and ball and raises its temperature than the local temperature of surrounding.When the scene is viewed by the slow motion camera darkening the whole area so only the area of raised temperature can be viewed and thus tells third umpire that weather a bat and ball has made a contact or not.
The invention of technology was required as snickometer was not giving at times a good accurate answer.
