Equal Pay For Wamens
Firstly I'm all for equality, and the only reason I even need to mention this, is due to complete idiocy of the world at the moment, where we are not allowed to criticize anything or be labeled a racist or sexist. The difference is I'm all about equality of opportunity, not quality of outcome, we should all strive for a world where people have equal opportunity, but even but even that alone is very difficult to achieve. And it's not because there is some system of oppression or because of the patriarchy or systemic anything, 999 times it is due to circumstances of life. The truth is unfortunately a brutal one, life is not fair, and we have to play the hand we are dealt.
The whole equal pay argument is now is going round social media after the U.S Wamen's soccer team wins their fourth World Cup tournament.

**"Equality of opportunity is freedom, but equality of outcome is repression." - Dick Feagler **

**"A fair and just society offers equality of opportunity to all. But it cannot promise, and should not try to enforce, sameness." - Christina Hoff Sommers **
It's fairly easy to understand why the pay gap in general is the biggest crock of shit ever imaginable, and that not an actual economist alive would even utter the words. What seems to be missing here is just basic logic, ask the first question to ask is how do sports players get paid and why? I'll give you a clue, it very much like actors, they are paid based on consumer interest, the more people want to watch them on the television the more, the more money they can make. When it comes to football, or soccer like they say in America, it works the exactly same. More people watch men's football,so that means there's more money to pay the players more, it's simple math. How people don't get this is beyond me, you can't get paid the same as the men because they are not worth the same, and that has nothing to do with sexism, the market decides what they like more.

You're either laughing or you're learning.

Yes, the market decides, simple math, BUT: It's a bit of a chicken/egg situation. I don't know the specifics of every country, I can just add what I know from 'our' women team.
Soccer women in The Netherlands have been held from competing for decades. There was actual 'threats' in play when one of our national teams wanted to enter a female team in the national soccer association - even though no rules said women couldn't play. So women have been 'held from professional support' for literally decades.
Then the women after a lot of fighting (back by our men btw) this thing finally were 'allowed' to enter soccer but there was no money (of course?) to pay them. So they had to do a daytime job and at night/weekends go training. That means: these women are not training at full capacity as their male counterparts do. As long as they don't get paid well *for doing sports( they can't quit their daytime jobs to train full-time. As long as they don't train full-time they won't be 'as good'. And so 'the market' doesn't wanna pay them. And so it's on and on and on.
Chicken and egg.
I don't believe equality of outcome is a desired goal per say, but equality of opportunity is. I always come back to the same image when thinking about this.
PS: Our women became second of the world yesterday wh0000p!
PS2: My dad (The Market) said our women played better than our men last two seasons.
PS3: Our women will get paid equally to our men in 2023, pay will be gradually upgraded the next few years. Did they finally prove their worth?
PS3: The Norwegian men said 'fuck this' at some point and closed the pay gap by giving half of their 'surplus' pay to the women. Just a fun fact to close of this convo :-)
It's wrong for anyone to be oppressed in any way, shape or form, that said, you can't resolve the problem by means of quality of outcome, even thought the desire is to create equality of opportunity, the ends do not ever justify the means.
You can't pay women the same as men in soccer, for the simple reason that by doing so you are manipulating the market to compensate for a perceived inequality, which the market has dictated. And the only way of achieving this is by means of manipulating the outcome (what they get paid) in hopes that the market will then compensate.
We also need to define the market, and not anecdotally that they currently scored more goals this season. The market is made up of billions of people who watch football all over the world, who go to the games, who subscribe to sports channels, who buy the merchandise, it's the football cubs, the brands who sponsor players, the advertising expenditure, the amount of money clubs sell the broadcasting rights to media companies for, what clubs pay for players, it's the entire industry that has been built up around this for the last 50 plus years. Then there's also the facts that males just happen to be far more physiologically interested in sport than women.
This conversation mostly has to do with men vs women's soccer world cup salaries, which is based on the market. Women's world cup viewership was at a record breaking 14 million this year, compared to the 3,6 billion viewership of the men's world cup, that is 0,4% of the men's world cup market. How is it equality to pay them the same?
It's like me saying I want to be paid 99.6% more because we do the exact same work, only you work for Apple Inc, and I work for Steemit Inc.
I understand how markets work. I'm not proposing equality of outcome as I said, but equality of opportunity. For me in this case that means the women should be able to train full-time like the men and not have a second job to pay for the bills. And no, that doesn't mean equal pay, for women that would be a normal salary as if they were working a full-time job in any office. The equality of opportunity here is that they can train as much as the men can. And then the market will decide how these well-trained women will be rewarded on top of their base salary.
I completely agree with you about a living wage, if enough money is generated to afford a full time job salary. But if women's soccer generates 2.5% of what them men's WC generated you can't exactly pay them the same right? And then give the "equal pay" to that of the men is by definition equality of outcome.
Nope, you can't pay them the same - at least not now. They might be able to paid the same in a Utopian future where women generate the same revenue from commercials and merchandise as men. But until then soccer clubs can pay them a living wage. As any company does: you pay a person with the belief they will generate more revenue than you pay in wages. If at the end of the year/a few years they don't, they get fired.
You missed a bit this time Mork. This is about Equal Pay for Equal Work in the US. The Women's team just picked up it's 4th star (WC Championships). I'm not so sure the men have qualified for 4 in my lifetime and have 0 stars.
The women sell more memorabilia and more tickets than the men's team. Their lawsuit does not suggest that the women should be compensated at the level that they have so obviously earned, but at a level equal with the men. Who, by your logic, are under performing and over paid.
This suit has nothing to do with the state of soccer in the world. It has everything to do with the state of equality in the US. And only the US.
And let the record show, I much prefer watching the US women's team. They play the game together and attack. It's good football.
And please don't use the tradition argument. I remember when tennis was absolutely forced to equal pay. Look today. Wimbledon, where the men's and women's prize pools are precisely the same. Look at all the revenue they lost for it!
I'm familiar with where the argument originated from, but my comment was more in general with where the narrative is right now, because it has become global as Soyrosa says, in her own country, as well as here in mine.
Regardless of the US women's team performing better than the men's US team, they are pretty much two completely different industries. Yes, in the States you can make the argument about equal work for equal pay, but at the same time it's not just about ticket sales or memorabilia, the men's league still forms part of the global soccer industry as a whole. Remember when a US. club team bought David Beckham, then there is the viewership, which is where most of the money comes from, the women's WC reaches 0,4% of what the the men's WC reaches.
My argument is in regards to the economics of the industry, which is being ignored in my opinion, all for the sake of gender equality. Demanding economic equality can only be done by completely ignoring the economics of the industry which is dictated by the consumer.
When it comes to Wimbledon, it's been packaged together, the women's tournament doesn't happen 6 months later, and the women's final had more viewership than the mens final, so they should get a bigger prize.
There is no market in Futball. None. It is a ruthless and utter monopoly. NOTHING is driven by the consumer. Nothing.
So, the normal 'end of monopoly' occurs. The only, repeat THE ONLY way to control a monopoly is legislate or adjudicate. The market has no influence whatsoever.
Speaking of monopolies and protecting them I have a question. How's your power supply doing? A protected monopoly.
That was a low blow. Sorry my friend, I'm off to a neutral corner to await the count :)
Hahahaha, not a low blow, that was funny, our power utility controlled by our socialist government is a joke.
Yeah the World cup football is a monopoly, but there is a market which generates revenue and salaries are still based on that revenue. It unfortunately chalk and cheese when you compare the two, men's WC generated $6 billion and women's WC generated $130 million.
