Aligning Incentives - The 1st of 10 reasons why Decentralisation will create abundance on planet Earth

in #eos7 years ago (edited)

When it comes to inventions and technologies over the last few millennia that have dramatically improved human life, we rarely consider to rank them in importance.

Jeffrey Tucker explained, in an interview with @Crypt0 at a Bitcoin Conference earlier this year that he would not just compare Bitcoin with inventions like Railways, Steel, or even Flight.

He would compare Bitcoin with the invention of Fire itself!

So here is the first of my top 10 reasons for why Bitcoin, cryptocurrencies like EOS, decentralised autonomous communities (DAC’s) and decentralised applications (DApps) can and hopefully will; create abundance on planet Earth.

1. Alignment of Incentives

Alignment in all aspects of life is very powerful.

When all the parts of a car are aligned and in sync, it drives smoothly. When players in a team are all aligned with each other as to what their roles and goals are and how they will operate to accomplish those goals, then the team can and usually will perform at a very high level, consistently.

As demonstrated by Yogi's for millennia and still by many meditators today; when one's chakra's are opened and aligned; Qi life-force energy flows. And as portrayed by NEO in the Matrix movie trilogy, when one's: will, mind and emotions are aligned; one can reach higher states of consciousness, and new levels of mastery.

Incentives, on the other hand, are akin to the law of attraction.

Incentive systems are everywhere in nature and they form the basis for interconnectivity and interdependency on a global scale.

So in the same way that flowers incentivise bees to pollinate their seeds by offering some of that sweet nectar as a reward, Decentralised Communities and Dapps can attract new users and incentivise participation in its network by offering rewards of various kinds. These may come in the form of mining rewards, a voting right or a different kind of economic reward.

Going forward, incentive models will become one of the main differentiators between the attractiveness, efficiency and opportunity that a decentralised community can offer people versus that of a centralised corporation.

Here’s why!

@IvanOntech did a great job explaining the importance of aligning incentives in the video linked below. Firstly Ivan eloquently explains how it is becoming more obvious that in today’s traditional companies (corporations); there are huge misalignments of incentives.

In a centralized company, there is a clear distinction between three main stakeholders:

  1. The Customers
  2. The Company itself (the employees)
  3. The Investors

In a corporation, at any time; one stakeholders interests can be prioritised over another. The most common example is when Investors force the Company to make more profits in some way - this may be in the form of firing people to cut costs or tampering with the quality of the product so it's produced cheaper. This of course negatively affects the Customer; as they have no say or vote in the matter whatsoever, even though they are the actual users of the product.

However thankfully, in the current era of the decentralised community, one that operates on the blockchain using a cryptocurrency token participatory model, this separation between stakeholders is evaporated because the three usual main stakeholders; the Customer, the Company and the Investor, all simultaneously become One.

--> The token holder immediately becomes the Investor as they can benefit financially if the organisation grows which will increase the value of their tokens.

--> The token holder can use the product and be the Customer, which in turn will enhance the organisations userbase and value and thus increase the tokens value.

--> But the best part of all; is that the token holder now also becomes the Company as they can exercise voting power and have a say in how the organisation is run.

This merging of key stakeholders of an organisation into one master-stakeholder presents an unprecedented opportunity for change.

It’s a paradigm shift.

DAC’s will empower us to reimagine and recreate how people connect, collaborate and trade on a global scale.

It means DAC’s are able to operate at much higher levels compared to their corporate cousins. This is because all the members of a DAC are incentivised to participate to increase its value. They are aligned as to what the purpose of the community is and how they will operate to achieve their mission. And the best part of all is;

This all happens without anyone being in charge.

So, as the direction and resources of organisations will be steered and managed by the whole community, it means DAC’s will inevitably become more purpose driven than profit driven . Whereas in corporations, both the resources and direction of the company are generally steered by a small number of people, sitting at the top, whose main goal is merely profit.

DAC’s give opportunity for the real desires of it's participants to be heard, acted upon and encoded into its constitution. This can ensure that the will of the people is being met. This is truly exciting and innovative.

So what are the real desires of the people today you might ask?

Well this ties into one final point that I would add to Ivan’s synopsis.

In my opinion; I actually think there is a fourth stakeholder, that we should always consider and permanently fix to this list.

And that is the Environment; Mother Nature

As the great teacher of Eastern Philosophy Alan Watts said;

'Man goes with his environment; in the same way as up goes with down
and back goes with front.'

The environment should always be treated like a primary stakeholder in every human organisation.

We all share the same incentive to breathe clean air, to eat nutritious food and to live happy lives and the only way we can have this is by having an abundant nature and a peaceful, thriving environment.

When we work together, anything is possible.

One new use case of a DAC that is aligning incentives in a creative way is HireVibes
(Disclaimer: I am part of the launch team @HireVibes) (HireVibes is the first Dappp to be developed and Airdropped to the EOS community by @EOSVibes - the Dapp Developing EOS Block Producer candidate.)

HireVibes is a decentralised Jobs application that incentivises crowdsourcing; using Economic and Environmental incentives.

HireVibes will incentivise the public crowd and niche talent communities to source and refer suitable candidates to job openings worldwide by:

  1. Charging a small token amount in cryptocurrency to clients (that's half the average cost of a recruitment agency) and;
  2. Redistributing most of it back to the successful candidate who gets the job; and with any referrer that helped them.

With that, a fixed portion of this reward will be distributed to successful candidates to donate to a selection of environmental and humanitarian initiatives of their choice - on every single hire made through the platform. HireVibes user's will be able to donate to construct water wells in Africa, plant trees, fund free energy projects, you name it; whatever the community (DAC) desires and votes for will be added to the HireVibes Donation page.

By connecting the financial incentive of earning a reward that’s equivalent to 4% of one’s annual rate or salary; with an environmental incentive of generating a significant donation for environmental and humanitarian initiatives that’s equivalent to 1% of one’s annual rate or salary; we believe this will appeal to both hemispheres of the brain, the masculine and the feminine. This will thus attract new users to HireVibes at a fast rate, which will in turn;

Create positive action for the environment at a fast rate.

This dear friends is the ultimate mission of HireVibes and its only now possible to create and realise due to the invention of Bitcoin, EOS and the re-emergence of the decentralised communities, which are in some ways; a natural phenomenon – this will be covered later in the series.

Next week we will share reason number Number 2 on our list for why Decentralision, DAC's and DApps can (and hopefully will!) create abundance on planet Earth.
