RE: [Warning] Black Hat Attacks from Steem Whales have been Promised!? [Part I]

in #eos7 years ago

Here lies another of the many reasons it is hard to get new people to be a part of steemit and succeed. This is so sad to read.

It would be great if the whales would try to help the little guys and grow the platform, but apparently they are chatting, infighting, and colluding instead. Very discouraging to us little guys.

Sort:

I have noticed how they all upvote each other automatically too, you're right, it's not encouraging!

That's why us little guys have to stick together. It seems like the big guys are focused on themselves and their intrigue.

I'm encouraged by people who are posting 1-3 times a day and making $10-$30 per post. That's what I'm aiming for and trying to ignore the battles up above as much as I can.

Today I do lots of commenting and lots of replying - since my posts basically do not get seen. I'm not giving up on the place yet but it is certainly a puzzle :)

So what is the strategy to be moderately succesful on steemit?

Provide the users with good content. Success wont come easy or instantly, unless your'e a bit of a celebrity like JB or AK.

One of my posts got just under 800 views but it didn't make anything lol. I guess you just have to keep putting out the content and showing some patience that you might one day be one of the success stories :-)

I'd say go back to 2016 if you can otherwise it's nothing more than a circle jerk :-) I can't see anyone having any quality noticed, I hope I'm wrong!

Thanks for the lengthy overview. Most of it I knew, but it was a good reminder. I think you should do some research on the profitability of SP leasing. It seems one cannot make profit out of it. The only thing you might gain is visibility.

I'm looking at my sp leasing as a win for the foreseeable future. The difference between an upvote of .01 and .14 has been dramatic in rewards and in attention to my voting and profile.

I'm shocked to tell you that my little upvote puts me to the top of most posts I vote on now! I'm almost always in the top 20 and often much higher than that.

This is because that majority of big fish who bother to vote for little fish at all are voting at

  • low power from too much voting
  • low percentage by using the slider

I used to get rewards of .001 - .010 maybe. Now I am up in the range of .030 - .050+ and my "actual" sp is growing much more quickly that it was. I could not afford to buy this sp myself right now. The effect of 150 sp leased is dramatic compared to 10 sp I could purchase with the same amount of sbd.

I think over time, the leasing will be less effective, but until my actual sp is above 1000 or so, I think it will be worth it. Maybe even higher than that, but I will not know until I get there :)

Thanks - leasing SP is something I'll look into further.

I was talking about absolute figures. You have the feeling your SP increases more quickly but you have to pay for it.

Here is a very detailed calculation and explanation. Your influence/visibility is a total different story.

https://steemit.com/steemit/@therealwolf/is-leasing-steempower-from-minnowbooster-worth-it

Edit: also check the comment where reggaemuffin confirms this.

I was also commenting on the post you link to at the time it was posted. The rewards used in that calculation are way low to what I am actually getting. Also - the post does not take into account the increase in "real" sp that comes from this trick.

The calculation misses the fact that during/after 4 weeks the "real" sp increase also comes into effect. That increase would not occur without the leasing. I'm petty sure my increase in "real" sp over the time will be more than the amount I spent to lease and more than I could have purchased directly with the same amount of sbd.

I'm not too interested in re-doing the calcs but -

I was getting about .001 - .008 for my upvotes. Now my rewards are usually above .020 and often above .050. I vote when I am above 85% power in both cases and vote where I think the reward will be high for me. Looking at the steemwhales site - my account value and rewards are much, much higher than they would be.

I have 3 leases now and only 2 show up so far since one is new. The total cost is 30 STEEM which would have gotten me about 40 sp forever instead of 1000+ for 1 month. The 40 sp would do absolutely nothing compared to the 1000.

By doing this, my "real" sp is growing much more quickly as the rewards are so much greater. I'm in the top 20 of most of what I vote for now. My vote makes a difference to the person I give it to instead of being .01 they do not even notice.

I don't think this holds up after about 5000 sp, but for minnow with less than 100 sp - I think this is a good way to go.

I just wrote a post about this. I hope this helps you, feel free to ask any questions.

I just read this - thanks for the comment curation idea. I had not thought of it in that way.

I just linked my recent post on this topic below. Maybe my tips will help you too. Some are similar, but I have some others :)

I'll check it out.

Yes I'd be happy with $20 a day, very happy! I have started commenting more, and sticking together, I think you are right there!

You are not a little guy. You are an experienced user with 53 rep. Those who fight are generally greedy ones. Steemit attracts a lot of greedy people. Actually, more greedy users are attracted to steem than general public which is a problem.

Thank you for the complement. I'm thinking I'm little until I have 5000 sp - but I'm making that up :)

I am connected to content creators on the rest of the internet. I have only shared the idea of posting here with a few of the "crazy" ones. So far only one has joined and kept posting. The other 4 think I am wasting my time and want to hear nothing about the place.

I'm not recruiting now, but instead try to help those who came in after me and are struggling. We get around 1000 new people a day and you know they all need help!

I have 53 rep too...

Its not that hard to achieve. And when it comes to the Steemit model - reputation is only one factor.

A heavier factor is Steem Power

...which any person with a heavy wallet can gain a lot of.

@fitinfun...I find it quite the opposite..

I find it as a true example of what God says in His Holy Word...darkness will battle against light...(John 1:5)

Ultimately, the Light will win...

ALWAYS....

For me, this is a real 'scene' out of Star Wars.

Peace!

But the darkside is winning.

An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. “A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy.

“It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.”
He continued, “The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”

The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”

When I start reading your comment I assumed I would like the outcome, not suprised that it did :-) I copied it and will send it to my dad, I'm sure hé will like it too, thanks! :-)

The dark side cannot win. If it does, then it will be destroyed by itself as well, so it still loses.

I do not know if light will win. I only know that the dark cannot.

Nope...

Not so...

Only what your natural mind is perceiving...

Peace.

Ironicallu this conversation kight be one of the best today.

Star Wars and the bible all in one! Maybe written by the same people even :)

As a Star Wars fan, I'm glad to be able to say it has a Biblically-based script...the battle of good against evil..darkness against light...

Yes, they are repetitive - I give you that :)

An inevitable problem from the beginning here on Steemit, unless they start changing things via forks, and preferably before we are freed from beta.

Hell, the other day, some guy dropped over $5,000,000 n Steem, and if that guy wanted to, he could manipulate the shit out of Steemit if he wanted to.

I foresee, if nothing is fixed, that a super rich Robin Hood of sorts will one day join the ranks of Steemit, and will up-vote all the shit content he sees, driving all the shit to the top... which is really going to be a fun spectacle to watch.

I'd hope that the Robin Hood of sorts 'doesn't' up-vote crappy content. ;c)

Simply behaving differently from the King-makers would suffice.

Ha ha, what I meant, is that with pay-to-win systems... manipulation is an easy task.

That is exactly my fear now. I've said this from Day One - What if the Alexa Ranking is fake? What if it is driven by the relentless churning of the big guys? Instead of good posts rising to the top of search - do we have things like videos with no text? I have been keeping the blinders on for this answer so far.

If crap content is what makes this place rank - we don't need the black hats to arrive. Steemit will implode all on its own as the outside world arrives to see garbage. I really hope that is not true and that is why I stay here and try.

People like Jerry Banfield are the controllers on here @fitinfun, and people like him are only out for themselves... which Steemit is sadly the perfect match for such personalities.

Well, I'm jerry's fan from a few platforms and he has helped me a lot in a few different areas. On steemit I post into his upvotable posts and he has gone to support those people I've promoted and others with good upvotes and he puts some of them on his upvote bot.

I think of jerry as a kid in a playhouse. He bashes around with optimism - tries what he tries, and keeps with what works. He makes mistakes, admits them and works to improve.

I only wish I could be so successful and still be helping those down the line like he does.

He capitalizes information that is freely available on Steem. If that isn't sleazy behavior, I don't know what is. His course on how to become a witness? Not only have other witnesses (@someguy123 comes to mind) offered instructions for no charge at all, but I have yet to see him putting in the effort of actually helping anyone but himself.

Glad he's working out for you, but the guy sells free information. It's a sleazy move, and he should know better.

Well, I'm surely not interested in being a witness, so this goes over my head. If being a witness is anything as complicated as posting here at all, I'm pretty sure his advice is helpful to some.

I haven't paid for any of jerry's help, but I have been paid for his upvotes, so I'm not feeling negative about his presence here. Also - he was the final reason I actually joined steemit when I did. He has infectious enthusiasm if you don't hate the guy :)

I'm glad I'm not the only one @Anarcho-andrei, I knew there were others who saw through the bullshit.

I agree. Followed.

He has helped me, and I've never been charged. I admit that I don't know his true motives, but I can't fault anyone for making a living selling things that anyone can get for free. Many people don't respect anything for which they didn't have to pay. If I have to charge someone to get them to take me seriously, so be it.

So true! This is my basic problem in life - giving away information for free. I hope one day I will figure out how to make better money with what I know, so in that sense - he's a role model.

Indeed. Thanks for the reply.

Do some more research on him @lifeworship, he's even been kicked off of Udemy for unethical behavior... the guys bad news.

Will do, I definitely don't want to be playing the fool.

Thanks.

Up-vote bots are a disease here on Steemit @fitinfun, and as an experiment, you should create a post that says, if you think Jerry Banfield is a douche, up-vote this post, and I bet his bot will up-vote the post... does that sound logical to you?

I'm not here to make controversy and stomp on anyone else's parade, but I see your point. I'm not in favor of bots in general, but I am happy to be on this one if this is the way the big guys play this game. I feel logic is not a good way to approach steemit in general and will send you down the wrong path time and again.

The "big guys" you speak of, are the ones who will unfortunately kill this platform if things don't change... and soon too.

I tried discord for a couple of days when I got here and got out of it. I am trying to stay on steemit and I am not really a chatter by nature. It seemed like a lot of wasted time, vote begging, bickering, and saying good morning and good night. I wish the work was on steemit instead of in chats, but I think I am in the minority.

Minority yes, but not alone.

Thank you! So glad to hear from another non-chatter :)

I'm with you! I can't even bring myself to get into the good groups on discord its just too much. I do all my work on this platform and don't worry about chat rooms.

I tried in the first days and ran! Then I decided to look into it later in case I was just too dumb to understand. But since then - I only hear of troubles related to chat or advertisements to try to get us to go there. I thought I would try again in Sep, but now it will be Jan or later as I have other more interesting things to pursue here.

stellabelle is now posting in twitter that she's gotten out of the chats, so I'm watching to see if she has any details about that decision. Maybe some of the technical people need them, but I'm not even sure of that.

I think chats should be happening in steemit comments where everyone can be involved and where it helps the platform have engagement for search engines. The average steemit post only gets three comments according to penguinpablo, so it's not like the chatters would be unwelcome.

I have other more interesting things to pursue here

Indeed!

A big long list of steemit tasks I don't get to :)

Ned likes to troll. :)

is it trolling or threatening? :/

Personally, I think Ned and I have an understanding at this point and I'm cool with it.

He doesn't like me and I don't like the way he runs Steemit. :)

That all said, I do have a little bit of respect for the guy for not getting all bent out of shape when I called him a prick in chat ... but I hope everyone understands that I only wrote this sentence ... to call him a prick again. :D

Hey Fuzzy, I've been meaning to ask you ...

Do you think I should go to SteemFest?

=b

i would love to say yes because i love the idea of steem. however the reality of it....is a bit different.

fucking reality.

Reality....

:(
