Paladins to get a Battleroyale Game Mode
2017 was a huge year for the Battle Royale genre. After Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds, H1Z1 King of the Kill and Fortnite's Battle Royale mode, it became pretty apparent that there is still room for growth in the genre, and that in 2018 we would see other big players join in.
The first developer this year to announce a Battle Royale game mode is Hi-Rez, the company behind SMITE, Hand of the Gods and Paladins. The game mode will be added to the already free-to-play Paladins as a free addition, following the footsteps of Epic Games who also went the same route when announcing their take on the genre. Paladins: Battlegrounds was announced at the Hi-Rez Expo taking place at Atlanta.
What makes this specific game mode unique is the fact that it will be the first one taking place in a game with heroes that have special abilities that can be used during the game, in addition to the in-game mounts. Up to this point, it would usually just be either a male or a female character without any kind of special abilities, scattering the world for weapons and items to use in order to secure a victory from 100 players.
As the year is just beginning, we will surely be seeing more publishers jump on the bandwagon of Battle Royale, as it turns out to be quite the lucrative game genre, at least for the time being. PUBG has been dominating the most played games chart on Steam for months on end, with an all-time peak of over 3 million concurrent players, and with over 20 million copies sold as of November 2017.
