Recommended short documentary: "The Last Ice Merchant"
Before freezers and fridges became mainstream, in some andean regions, ice blocks carved out of the eternal glaciers were sold.
Technology rendered this practice extinct, or almost exticnt, for there is still one man who makes a living by mining and selling, using the most rudimentary means, ice from El Chimborazo mountain in Ecuador.
The ice this gentleman sells, is centuries old. The maker of this documentary is american cinematograher Sansy Patch.
That is a really cool video. I didn't realize that being an ice merchant was a job. Well, according to the video there's only the one guy doing it, but it was cool to get a glimpse of their culture. I was surprised that even though his brothers had stopped going to get the ice that they still wanted to be doing it, if they could.
