We know The Monkey Gland has an ugly name. And looking at the image we can also say that...
its color is not at all pleasant. But this cocktail that became popular in Paris in the early 20th century has a decidedly original history. Its inventor is bartender Harry MacElhone, who at that time ran Harry's New York Bar in the French capital.
In order to know the reason for this name it is obligatory to mention the Russian doctor Serge Voronoff. This renowned surgeon, an expert in transplants, claimed that grafting tissue from a monkey's testicle into a human's testicle would lengthen life. More than 40 men underwent operations in the 1920s. Obviously, without any positive results. As a subtle irony, Harry MacElhone created a cocktail that was also supposed to provide longevity and a color that was reminiscent of those surgeries. And he called it The Monkey Gland. I mean, monkey testicles, which is what you're going to end up asking for one of these days because it looks so good....
Ingredients
45 ml gin
45 ml cold orange juice
1 tablespoon of grenadine
1 tablespoon of absinthe
It is very easy to prepare, as it only requires you to mix the ingredients in a shaker with ice. It is served in a cocktail glass.
