Broken English
Broken English refers to a poorly spoken or ill written version of English language sometimes considered as pidgin.
Children who speak pidgin English stands the risk of losing fluency in the standard English. Pidgin English distorts regular English, it doesn’t help in classes. Even our graduates gets their tenses mixed up and other grammatical blunders thanks to pidgin English.
When a child is growing up in a home where pidgin English is their communication language, he or she takes it up very fast and the child holds onto it because it is the language being used in the home. When the child gets to school a different language is been spoken in school which looks more like the pidgin he or she knows and corrected anytime he or she speaks. The child takes correction in the class and after school, he or she goes back to the same home, where everybody communicates with pidgin English . The child is confused, different thing at home, different thing in school but the two sound LIKE THE SAME THING to him or her.
That is the stage where a child creates his or her own language, there by murdering and telling the LINGUA FRANCA to R.I.P.That is when you hear the child saying things like :
'have you eat? '
'Give me my book, I wan write'
'my mama tell me to tell you she won come `
'she thief my money'
This is why we hear grammatical blunder everywhere both on movies, online interviews on television and yet nobody sees nothing wrong with it.
PIDGEN is the major reason why some of us can’t us our tense right. Imagine a graduate saying things like:
'did you went out today? '.That is very disappointing.
How can they know that they are wrong? when they speak things like:
'I don chop' instead of 'I have eaten '
'I don go their house before ' instead of 'I have gone to their house before.
Again PIDGIN is the reason why we don't know the right use of their continuous tenses or actions. Especially the pidgin speaking states.
I am appealing to teachers and parents in all Over THE PIGGEN SPEAKING STATES LIKE:RIVERS,LAGOS,DELTA AND MANY OTHERS to help their children, constant correction can help a child adapt. Parents, try as much as possible to prohibit PIGGEN in your houses. If you don't know how to speak good English try as much as you can to learn or speak your native language to the child so that he would never get confused between regular English and pidgin English
