One of the most splendid caves of the continent. This, as it was called by the thousands and thousands of Guácharos that inhabit it, is carved into sedimentary rocks that formed 130 million years ago.

Location

The Guácharo Cave is located between the Monagas and Sucre states, at the eastern end of the Turimiquire mountain range, 4 km from the town of Caripe. You can reach this park by road, following the Caripe road, from Maturín, Cumaná or Carúpano. Considered the largest cave in Venezuela, it has an area of ​​63,200 hectares

History

It was the first Natural Monument decreed in Venezuela in 1949 under the name of the German scientist Alejandro Von Humboldt was very interested in making it known to the world, who explored the cave in 1799 for scientific motivations and who in 1816 released the most relevant of the 1,500 inventoried caves in the country.

In 1975, the National Park was decreed when the protection area was expanded in order to preserve its ecosystem, thus guaranteeing the biological processes of the cave. This natural monument 10.2 kilometers long is considered one of the most interesting cave formations on the continent.

The entrance of the Cueva del Guácharo is 23 meters high and 28 meters wide, allowing tourists to visit, entering up to 1,500 meters, which are regulated for exploration.

Within it you can see the stalactites and stalagmites that are created by the constant action of water on the rock. The visiting hours are from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, although after 3:00 pm the tour is short; You can only travel 1,500 meters, up to 825 meters there are guácharos and that's why diesel lamps are used with very discreet light because these birds are phobic photos.
