Why are fresh engineers jobless in India?
According to statistics, India produces approximately 1.5 million engineers, annually. Out of these 1.5 million engineers, only 7% are employable and more than 60% engineers are unemployed. There are more than one reason which lead to this poor condition.
There have been several discussions regarding the increment of the employment opportunities for the engineers. And while looking for solutions, we figured out the flaws that created the problem in the fit place. The main reasons for the unemployment are as follows:
- Production of engineers in bulk: The fact that India produces more than a million engineers per year is shocking. The balance between employees and the jobs is disturbed. And the entire system, ultimately gets disturbed. Since the jobs are less and the number of engineers much greater, a very very less number of engineers actually get hired.
- No exposure: The Government of India has taken responsibility to produce fine engineers and so it is mandatory for the undergraduates to at the least do three internships and only then they are eligible to apply for jobs. Brilliant idea, for the upcoming generations as they would have knowledge about the working class. And also, internships only add value to anyone's resume. The problem here is that not everyone have had the opportunity to do internship due to lack of awareness and support. That is definitely one reason for the unemployment.
- The real industry: What we learn theoretically is different than the practicality of the same subject. The educational system that we have is traditional and so it emphasis more on the theory than the practical. This makes the engineers ignorant about the real working conditions in the Industry.
- Casual learning: The pattern that is followed in an engineering college is not only unfair but also exhausting. The 4 years of graduation is undoubtedly a lot of pressure, these four years teach the best lessons of the life. But fails to discipline the engineers, in fact can give the engineers a wrong impression. Because in real world, there are submissions. Instead of promoting learning, donkey work is encouraged, which further creates unnecessary consequences.
- Extra curricular: When somehow, an engineer overcomes all the above four criteria he may find himself in a difficulty for not having actively participated in College events.
- Overqualified: More than 50% engineers get hired below their technical qualifications. And the remaining ones never get the job they like and most of them end up working at an IT company.
Theses are the few major reasons which have led Indian engineers to unemployment or underemployment. If the system fails to find a fix to this significant problem, soon there will be a great distress in the country.
