DAS UNERNSTLICH SCHWEIGENDE AUGE
the title is a untranslatable wordplay in German: it refers to the artist Max Ernst,
and indirectly to his painting title
"The Eye of Silence".
In English, ernst means serious, so the title translated is:
"The Unserious Silent Eye"
thus, the intended pun is lost in translation.
This is a small drawing I am working on - the stage so far is from 2 days ago in my studio. I am going back later today to finish it - so maybe once finished, I just edit this post and add the finished piece.
Some details of the unfinished piece
Some "tricks" I used in this drawing: I press a kneadable eraser into structural material and dip it into a black background. A similar lift-off I also achieve dipping a crumpled packing tape into a dark background. I manipulate the image further with various erasers, including an electric eraser. Good to work with, but hard to find, are typewriter erasers.
Not used in this, but had done so before, are collages of rubbings, like in this drawing: WALDRAPP'S TOMB

A few years ago, giving a drawing workshop in Vienna. Ernst Fuchs was a surprise visitor that day

firstly, love the pun in the title, and although it is lost in translation i can kinda chuckle at it... :>
the picture is wonderful, as usual, i love the unearnest silent eye because it is a little unearnest in its silence (that is, it is quite LOUD, with its bulging form and visible veins)

thank you spiderman! Glad you appreciate the pun. It took me a moment to think about it, since I had Max Ernst's title in mind, but knew it was his, so ..... once I've done the opposite, a title for a painting was "Ernsthaftes Spiel im Inneren Erdteil" - since it was done in decalcomania technique, like Max Ernst also used. It translates into "Serious (or Earnest) Play in the Inner Continent". That one I sold to the director of the Ernst Fuchs Museum in Vienna. Re tip about the eraser: it takes a bit of practice, but it's great for cutting corners. You have to find out what works and what doesn't. Mentioned Fuchs above: I am at his museum frequently, and am studying his graphic work, and while I came upon my methods by myself, I noticed that he was using some similar shortcuts also.
Even though you reveal your 'tricks of the trade' it does not lesson the magical heavenly quality of this piece. It was made by the hands of the unseen with the magic of light :)
