Egyptian beliefs

The ancient Egyptians believed that when someone dies, their body must be preserved so that their spirit can recognize them after death.

STEP one

The first step of mummification was to remove the brain. A long metal hook was pushed up their nose. Then the hook was wiggled around to scramble up their brain. They used the hook to pull out the chunks of brain, through their nose.

STEP two

After the brain was removed, a stone knife was used to cut them open. They took out the intestines and put it in the coordinated jar. they did the same with the stomach, then the liver, and then the lungs.

The Jars Significance

The lid to the first jar, is the head of Oebehsenuef, the falcon headed god; who looks after the intestines. The lid to the second jar, is the head of Duamutef, the jackal headed god; who watches over the stomach. The lid to the third jar, is the head of Imsety, the human headed god; who looks after the liver. Finally, the lid to the last jar, is the head of Hapy, the baboon headed god, who is in charge of the lungs.

STEP three

The table is then tilted, so that all of the liquids can drain out of the body. The body is then stuffed with natron, to absorb all of the moisture inside of the body. The body will stay packed with natron for forty days, before it is removed. They then take a bag of natron, and dump it out all over the body.

STEP four

After its been forty days, the natron is removed from the body. They take the packed natron out of the body too. The body is then stuffed with linen, to plump up the body.

STEP five

The body is then covered in resin, a sticky yellowish or clear substance. The resin will help preserve and harden the skin.

STEP six

The body was then wrapped up in toilet paper..... I mean linen. Four amulets were then placed on the body. A second layer of linen was then wrapped around the amulets and the body. A mask was then placed over the mummies face.

The Afterlife

They were than moved into a big case, which was moved into a sarcophagus. The spirit then enters the afterlife. The "Eyes of Horus", painted on the side of the sarcophagus allow them to see through the wall for all eternity.
