Importance of the study of soil degradation in agricultural production
Making the most profitable use of the land, in the wide range of possibilities, without causing the irreversible degradation of it, apart from constituting a difficult task is a challenge that we set ourselves in these times. Only considering the main function of soils, which is to be the base for the production of biomass and therefore for the food production required for the feeding of our peoples.
What is important to study of our soils?
If we focus on seeing the soil as a valuable resource of major importance for agricultural production, then we need to study its functions, uses and the causes that cause its degradation, in practical form, and especially in agricultural activities would be very interesting to consider the application of new uses on certain ecological functions, also some socio-economic, technical and industrial activities that generate a counterpart to traditional agricultural performance, in which degradation can be stopped so that natural products can be harvested that do not degrade the soil and therefore be a friendly activity with the environment.
Another very important point that is important to study of soils is the evaluation of the impacts generated by the agents that cause soil degradation and the alternatives in terms of corrective measures.
What other importance apart from the agricultural has the study of the soil?
Soil functions should be studied focused on various aspects, since their functions are diverse, apart from being the solid base in the production of biomass, soils fulfill other important functions for human life, on the one hand soils act as filtering, cushioning and transforming adverse compounds that pollute the environment, thus protecting the food chain and groundwater from pollution. That is, a degraded soil is not only the main reason for not being able to harvest agricultural items, but this degradation also contemplates the subsequent contamination of other external agents of our environment such as the atmosphere and water.
On the other hand, soils are the foundation for the establishment of infrastructure works, industrial facilities, transportation systems, spaces for recreational activities, and are also used as waste and waste receptors for human activities. Reason is that leads me to think that not only for us graduates in agricultural business administration and agricultural production engineers is important to study the soil, but also for civil engineers, because if the soil is the support and basis for some constructions, then it is important that they study also the capacity that these have to support large structures.
Does the degradation of the soil have serious consequences?
The accelerated and irreversible degradation of soils, I believe, is one of the greatest dangers for humanity in the near future, since its deterioration can be gradual until it reaches its total destruction.
There are interactions and also severe competences between the different uses to which the soil and the land can be subjected. In this sense, soil degradation can be explained as the different forms of use or exploitation, so that the excessive use of one or more of the functions associated with the soil will be at the cost or risk of the others. This is how the different forms of competition between different types of land use explain the main factors and causes of soil degradation.
Soil degradation not only undermines the productive capacity of ecosystems, but also has important effects on global climate changes through alterations in water and energy balances, in biogeochemical cycles, resulting in a negative impact on agricultural production and the environment, the degradation of the soil leads to economic, political and social instability, which may make us reason to consider the degradation of soils a great threat, even that this may affect the entire structure of the humanity, part that has already been during all the years that it has been in existence on the planet.
Reflection
Let's take care of our soils, its degradation is due to many human activities, that if corrected and studied will make our soils do not suffer such accelerated degradation that threatens not only the ability to sow and feed us, but also accelerates the passage of climate change, let us help the soil preservation and we will see how the quality of life of all the individuals that make up this planet will improve in favor of our well-being.
