Reputation is not just a number, the higher your reputation is, the more worthy you are !
When you first join steemit, you will start with a low reputation and it's usually about 25. But when you post good quality content and people start to upvote your posts and comments, your reputation goes higher. Especially if people with high reputation upvote you.
When you have a high reputation on steemit, that means you have a weight. So if you write posts or comments, they will go higher even if you don't earn a lot from them. So you will always be the most noticeable. And you will have better chance to be upvoted by whales, and they may follow you to upvote you all the time.
Reputation shows that you are active in the community and useful at the same time. So be careful and don't ruin your reputation by writing something against the community, don't spam and be polite. Respect others and you will be also respected. Try to understand people and not to be stubborn.
All good advice... reputation is very hard to earn.. don't blow it once you have some.. for me the higher my reputation goes the more pursue I feel to improve the quality of my posts and comments

You are Right too!Reputation matter to some extent as you described But The Quality Matters If You Write Quality Content at 25rep you Will get whale Upvotes Obviously but If You are at 70rep And Do not have quality Than whales will not upvote or upvote with little power You might not earn as the you should earn according to your Reputation Points.
SO Produce Quality Your Reputation Will automatically Go High

Good advice. Having a good reputation is what I've been basing building my site on, and it's working. It's working slowly, but I'm getting there and I know when I do, it will be because I earned it, not because of any shortcuts.
Yes we don't need any shortcuts if we think about our reputation. I am working for the reputation also because I know how it's important.

Reputation is a good indicator, yet there has been recent talks about removing the whole concept, since its usefulness has been decreasing and it doesn't have a real effect/benefit on the platform itself.
