The Road to Computer Engineering (What to learn)

Again, I'm @chuuuckie. A Computer Engineering student, currently on my 5th year of studying this degree and hopefully would be my last year. So today there will be new fresh graduates from Senior High School who want to enroll in this degree. Many of them do not know what computer engineering is or how hard could it be. Those answers will be answered here.

What is Computer Engineering?

"Computer engineering is a discipline that integrates several fields of electrical engineering and computer science required to develop computer hardware and software. Computer engineers usually have training in electronic engineering (or electrical engineering), software design, and hardware–software integration instead of only software engineering or electronic engineering. Computer engineers are involved in many hardware and software aspects of computing, from the design of individual microcontrollers, microprocessors, personal computers, and supercomputers, to circuit design. This field of engineering not only focuses on how computer systems themselves work, but also how they integrate into the larger picture." - Wikipedia

Basically Computer Engineers design and develops hardware and software computer related things. Computer Engineers must also know the basics of Electrical wiring and Electronic components such as transisors, diode and resistors. Computer Engineers could be able to learn more about in the field of Electrical Engineers, but not as broad as the Electrical Engineers. Computer Engineers must learn the basic pieces of Electronic pieces since Computer Engineers are bound to hardware and software.

Some often compare Computer Engineers to an I.T. guy. In my own opinion, they are somewhat similar but when you graduate from an Engineering's degree. You will get an Engr. tag before your name.

Computer Engineers also needs to master the basics of Computer Programming. Programming languages like

• C++
• C#
• Basic C
• Assembly Language

Its a very huge foundation for your future.

What you need to know

You should be aware that an Engineer needs math in order to develop its skills, develop its decision making skills and more. Why we need to learn more about math . Engineers basically needs to learn the basic topics these are the following

• College Algebra
• Trigonometry
• Analytic Geomtery
• Advanced Statistics
• Solid Mensuration
• Physics
• Chemistry

After finished learning and passing all of those topics. These topics will follow.

• Differential Calculus
• Integral Calculus
• Differential Equations
• Advanced Engineering Math
• Statics and Dynamics of Rigid bodies
• Strength and Materials
• Engineering Economy

Math was really important for us. And also for me, it served as a foundation of the next important topics I will share later on. So under this section, most of the topics that was not important at all will not be added. The following are next important topics you should learn as a student of a Computer Engineer.

• Basic Electronics
• Routing & Switching
• Basic Programming
• Electrical Circuits
• Data Structures
• Logic Circuits
• Computer Data Assembly
• Computer Engineering Drafting & Design

Those topics mentioned above for a students capacity to learn is intermediate. It can be more understandable if the teacher teaches well and also as long as a student will try to listen consistently. The student should always be mentally attentive in all times of classes and also the student's assigned tasks. This will also enhance his studying skills to prepare the student to the hard level.

Under this section, these will be hardest topics the student will encounter.

The section above is very important for the next research the student will encounter. Thus the topics mentioned above are far from important for most of the industry. Now that you all know the important topics that the student should and will encounter, quick tip : never copy your classmates answer.

Solve, Design and Create

One important thing that is missing about Engineering is that the joy. Students and Engineers must enjoy the job they do. Always keep in mind that students should not be pressured when they will build something or create something. Students should be pressured supposed to be on Math Equations, Problem Solving and etc. The students should take their time in creating and fixing, in this, they will be cautious in their acts. They will be more attentive and focused on the job they are doing.

Interaction

Students must build more relationship to friends. Two things on why friends are important inside your school. One is Companionship, in times when you forget something like your assignments. Your friend will always be there in times of your forgetfulness. Second is Investment, things you should know about investment is that it is a long term, investments not in money but in friendship. After you finish and graduate they will still be there helping you the problems on an equation or real life situation. Some people of your life will even disintegrate or never had a contact. In interaction of friends and any person who has a different attitude, you should always stay humble and know your place. Keep your mindset that there is no one below you or above you, treat every person equally. In interaction you will learn more how to communicate and understand the principle of your field, whether it's Mechanical, Electrical or Industrial.
