One reason not to overreact to the unemployment data is employment is actually doing pretty well. So we are getting mixed signals in the labor market.

Here's the prime age employment population ratio. It is above pre-pandemic levels now and increasing. It is at its highest level in two decades.

In the 2008 and 2001 recessions we saw a steep decline in the employment population ratio.
