Hydrogen

in #economy7 years ago

I don't write much about real world financials. It doe not make much sense. But when it comes to hydrogen, I could go on and on about it. Part of the reason is my stake in Nel ASA, a producer of water electrolysis plants.

Green stocks

I realized a few years ago the petro fueled economy is in decline. Not that there still is money to be made in petroleum, it is doomed on a longer term. Typically the term when I want to sell my stocks and do something with the profit.

Why hydrogen?

Electrification of transportation has several routes. Batteries is the simple solution. And as of now the cheapest one. But there is one thing that batteries don't do very well and that is continuous heavy loads. Adding more batteries to it only takes you a bit further since they just add to the weight.

Hydrogen on the other hand has the energy stored in electrons. The lightest material there is. Producing just as much power when full as it does when it's near empty. And it scales easily. They build trains nowadays that are powered by h2. Even ships and airplanes are in early testing as well.

Looking ahead

Batteries are here to stay. And they have their place for lighter applications. But when it comes to reliable, continuous use under heavier loads, there is one solution that has the flexibility and scalability to harness green energy. Green energy like solar, wind and hydropower. This energy can't be stored. Well it can if the circumstances are right. But in most cases they are not. Especially for solar and wind.

These sources are getting so cheap nowadays, it is incredible. It will cause a major shift in our energy consumption. And it already has made a huge impact on the energy mix.

Hydrogen puts it to work. All that cheap solar power that can only be used in daytime and all the unpredictable wind power can be and will be used for transportation to a larger and larger degree. And the economics of scale will make it more and more common.

That car looks amazing!

It's not bad. Second generation of vehicles will be much better. And they are due the next years. Mercedes, BMW, Toyota, Huyndai, Audi, Honda, GM. They all have something coming up.

That's exciting something I would actually want to drive. Right now I only use a bicycle or public transportation.
