With Gary Becker. The "old" Chicago.

in #economics2 years ago

At this time of fading appreciation of the nature and merits of classical liberalism, this video may be more relevant than ever.

It features two of my most illustrious teachers from the university of Chicago (both Nobel prize winners), Gary Becker and Milton Friedman (perhaps the most influential economist in terms of economic policy of all time – except for John Maynard Keynes).

I had Friedman for two courses but was very familiar with all of his work. I took many courses from Becker at the very time that his research was blossoming. It was an incredibly fortuitous opportunity – one that greatly improved my life.

Friedman was a good teacher, but not a likeable one. He did not suffer fools gladly. Becker was much more amiable, almost humble.

Some of the substance of the discussion in the video is sadly prophetic of the emergence of formidable anti-market sentiment and policy, emanating from academia and pseudo-intellectual circles. Becker is pessimistic, Friedman is not. Becker turned out to be right .

Perhaps Friedman may yet prevail.
