Jakarta, January 19, 2025 – A shocking incident has overshadowed one of Asia’s biggest music events, the Djakarta Warehouse Project (DWP) 2025. Several Malaysian tourists have reported being victims of extortion by rogue police officers near the concert venue. These allegations have tarnished Indonesia’s reputation for safety, particularly among foreign tourists.
Allegations of Police Extortion
The case emerged after 45 Malaysian nationals claimed they were forced to hand over money by certain officers. Investigations revealed that 18 police officers were involved in the incident. Evidence, including $155,000 (equivalent to approximately IDR 2.4 billion), was seized during the inquiry.
According to the victims, they were extorted under the pretext of unclear legal violations. This incident has sparked outrage not only among the victims but also the Malaysian public, who have condemned the behavior as unfair and unprofessional.
Impact on Indonesian Tourism
The incident immediately impacted Indonesia’s tourism reputation. Some victims stated that they are reluctant to return to Indonesia, citing safety concerns. This is particularly damaging as DWP, an annual event, has consistently been a major attraction for international tourists, including those from neighboring Malaysia.
"If tourists don't feel safe, they will think twice about visiting again," said a tourism analyst in Jakarta. "Especially if they feel there is no protection from the authorities who are supposed to ensure their safety."
Firm Action from the Police
Jakarta’s Metro Police Chief has ensured that the investigation into this case is being conducted seriously. All officers involved have been detained for further questioning. "We will not tolerate such behavior. If found guilty, severe penalties will be imposed," the Police Chief emphasized in a press conference.
The police also promised to improve internal monitoring systems to prevent similar incidents from happening again. Strengthening integrity training for officers is among the solutions currently being developed.
International Reactions
News of the incident quickly spread internationally, sparking particular concern in Malaysia. Several international media outlets covered the case, highlighting integrity issues within the Indonesian police force. This has the potential to strain the strong ties between the two nations, especially in tourism and cultural sectors.
