RE: Channeling my inner Amy Winehouse

Hi Beth, great voice and good singer. Some tips on sound: record with the level set too low and do not use auto level or a compressor as they do in recording studios. I like to stay at least 6db below nominal because you can always bring the level of an undistorted recording up to the level you need and you can add compression, EQ and 21-31% reverb in Audacity (free) before mixing with the backing track. For my videos I actually mix room and panel (if available) sound in the video editor using roughly the same method. It is also possible to take care of Camera shake in the editor when you are scaling to a smaller format, say from 1080p to 720p. I rarely toss my footage because I may in the future have the editor, computer and graphics card that can handle that. Hope this helps. Fun video!!

Thanks! I actually use Sonar, and there are so many buttons and things that I don't even have a clue what they do, bahaha. I have only ever really just recorded my voice and it's frustrating because there is a lot of clipping and just dumb stuff in my recordings that I'm dealing with. I have never had any formal training and don't really know where to start!

Not familiar with sonar. Just looked it up and it's a Cakewalk product. Ok, there should be a VU meter, it goes red when you sing in to the microphone. There should be a dial or slide that is labeled "Level", "input Level"or something like that on the channel you are recording to; slowly turn that down until the VU meter no longer goes red. Then turn it down another 2 or 4db depending on how wild it's going to get. Try that and see what you get. You could also increase the distance to the microphone when you sing if you can't figure out the controls, but you'd sacrifice on clarity of that great voice.

P.S. I also have no formal training, I just tinker with machines until they either work or blow up... I blew up a few so don't let me near yours, LOL!

Bahaha I would love to hear some of those stories! I have worked a bit with the input levels, but I still get this sound like the gain is too high or something, I just don't know how to fix it! It's so frustrating! Maybe one day I will figure it out!

Ok, well there is a forum for Cakewalk Sonar where you may find answers. You need to sing; not waste time to figure out the kaput'r!
