Disappointment with DTUBE

in #dtube6 years ago (edited)

my LAST DTUBE video!
I was big promoter of DTUBE and made more than 100 videos which I uploaded, most of them was glorification of this Steemit app and Steemit itself.
Now I wonted to download them and to make one great compilation from all of them. But I can not even play my old videos and of course not download them.

It is not a big issue that I can not make this compilation but big issue is that all my hard work and more than 1000 hours of rendering are lost!
Here I will share some videos I made celebrating Dtube - They are saved because luckily they were uploaded to youtube too.

Now , I am very sad to say this, but me as owner of small video production company in Croatia and video content creator and one of the biggest promoters of this app - will STOP using IT!

It is very frustrating to lose all your work like this!
I think that Dtube should at least say to their users that they delete the videos after a while to free up space on the servers.

Very, very disappointed ex Dtube user!

Stupid video.
Good luck to you.
You own a small video production company in Croatia yet you don't know the importance of backing up your videos?

I do back up videos for my professional needs- but this is not the issue.
The issue is that Dtube users should know that their videos will be removed after 45 days.
That's all.

If you would have had any knowledge about how IPFS works or even saw the help section on their discord channel you would know that the videos will be deleted. I mean, even I keep a backup of my own videos, how come you run a professional video production service and you don't know how important is to.back up your videos if they are so important to you?. This all smells like you just want to make bad PR based on your mistakes. Good riddance...

True - I do not have any knowledge about how IPFS works and this is my mistake.
I took YT standard for granted and again this is my mistake.
But I still think that many Dtube users do not know that also - and that's this post about.
About PR - I made a lot PRO Dtube PR - more than 20/30 animation glorifying Dtube.
I am sure it is much more than you did!
Downvoting and telling that I have to backup my videos is just superficial understanding of the main point of the post and bad communication behavior.

I see it more superficial to make this video and upvote it to the first page knowing that it was your responsibility to make backups, or know how IPFS works... First thing I see when I open DTube is this... How does this look to people who just want to join the platform?. Of course I downvoted it and I wish my downvote was powerful enough to take your video out from the front page. You don't know what I have done for this platform. And I won't lose my time here telling you.

You do know that you can download your YT vids, right?

yes I know, but I stooped to use youtube in favor of Dtube ,so most of the videos are lost on dtube- I didn't beck up them on YT.

Surely you have original copies on your computer?

I just started using Dtube and am just coming to grips with it. Seems to have a few bugs, I also have a load of videos on YouTube, but I am now starting to upload them all on here.
Are you saying that once they are up you cannot download them?

You can download them in 480, but older than 45 days you can not.
They remove them.

Ah shit I didn't know they remove them!! Does that mean you need to claim your rewards before they remove the video?

You claim your rewards after 7 days, they keep your video alive for 45 days(you can download the video and play it) after 45 days video is removed- deleted)
They leave just a thumbnail and text.

No rewards will not disappear once it gets paid out. They only delete files off their servers (they may remain in the IPFS network), but everything else stays on the blockchain (including the link to the video).

You can download as source video, just select Source in the settings

For people who complaining that you should know IPFS to use DTUBE doesnt get the fact that its a roadblock to user and adoption. No wonder only limited market exist for crypto product as of now. if a user need to know "http" to use internet, how many products would have survived. From a regular user perspective its a road block and who ever solve that wins the market. So its simple DTUBE doesnt solve the issue ,atleast yet ..

I am not sure that I understood well:) Sorry my English is not good enough.
Can you simplify this ?

If you purchase the hosting package from OneloveDtube then your Dtube videos will never be deleted.

Pity that I did not know about it before.
But thank you for the info though.
Right now I am really frustrated -sorry for expressing it.

Me too I didn’t know that before.

Learning every single day about Dtube and it’s potential.

Please feel free to ask me anything about Dtube and I’ll try to help:)

Hey bro see the roi then place bid... you got loss and also we all of that round. please man....

It is one way to look at the situation :)

I agree that is one of the downsides to DTube, I read back when I first started uploading that they only stream videos for so long, based on a formula of how much data (size) the videos uses, and how much steem the video earns.

I don't like that the videos disappear after a while, but I kind of accepted that DTube is smaller than YouTube and doesn't have the resources to keep this stuff forever.
I'm glad that my old posts to DTube don't completely disappear, as I consider the description, thumbnail, and comments to be an important part of my video history, but I always felt they should replace the run-time numbers on the thumbnail with some kind of indicator that the video will no longer stream from DTube.

I've read somewhere it's possible for people to stream their own videos from their own server, but that is not something with in my abilities.

On the other side of this, I have accidentally uploaded the same video more than once, with out issue. One of my older videos (previously uploaded to YouTube before I knew about DTube) I uploaded to DTube, then months later I had forgotten that I had uploaded it, and uploaded it again, same title, thumbnail, and everything. Later I realized oops, I had already uploaded that video, but I didn't feel too bad about the mistake as the original upload was no longer playing.

When I first discovered DTube I decided to make effort to upload to DTube before anywhere else, and make DTube the main place for any video upload... I don't have a big enough following for anyone to really notice where I upload 1st, still I wanted to make it so that I used DTube before any other place (like YouTube) ...however, I eventually gave up on that, and instead when I post to DTube I include links to other places I uploaded the video, so if it no longer plays on DTube, then the DTube description, and related Steemit article will include links to alternate versions.

It is cleaver thing to do :) I am just sorry that I didn't know before. I would keep them somewhere uploaded on server or on my PC.

Yet you've managed to generate $42.393 as of this posting.

If you look better you will see that the biggest votes are from paying bots!
I just wont more exposure of this post, because other Dtube users should know about this.

First off, Be sure to always keep your footage on an external hard drive. Why would you ever not have backups? 2ndly, why would you promo this post with that title? You cannot have a centralized server for storing video content on a decentralized platform. You can buy space on IFPS. Don't blame dtube for you not having backups of your work. Also, you ruined ROI for some people promoting this video. Have fun on youtube!

So judgmental! I am not blaming Dtube for not having enough storage and capacity to store uploaded videos.I do understand that they have a lot of traffic and that in this stage is not possible for them to do it.
But I am blaming dtube not telling to their users that this is the case.
I am video professional with my own video production company and I do have storage and beck ups for my work for the videos I make for my clients. Here I made a mistake because I thought it is same thing like on youtube - but big part of the blame goes also to Dtube and this is why I promoted this post- for the people who do not know! and yes -thank you for the downvote!

My downvote was the judgement. Everything else I said wasn't judgmental. Dtube released a white paper when they came out, they did tell everyone how everything worked. There are positive ways to inform the community that dtube doesn't store video files for very long, rather than getting upset at yourself and rage quitting the platform. Stay, keep up the hard work, make backups. I will give you upvotes, especially when I see an awesome graphic animation you have created.

yeah kinda a down side to dtube, dtube stores its data on ipfs which is pinned on dtube server but for only so long. potential upside is someone can just spin up their own copy of dtube and all the videos are already loaded via ipfs (except ones that have been deleted/unpinned), I would really love to see dtube have another server/partner store the video data, i might consider doing if i get the time one day (something along the lines of enter in video URL and it stores forever)

Ooo really!? I just started using it today for the first time!

Make a beck up, or upload them somewhere where you can have access.

Okok! Thank you for sharing!
Please don’t leave us! Keep dtube !
