[EP138] - Find your tribe!

in #dtube6 years ago

Hi everyone!
Hope you're all well!

As a species, we've really conquered all of the major issues our ancestors faced. Food is way too easy to come by, we're physically safe, we have shelter and protection and we're living longer than ever.

In days past, you would honestly only survive if good people helped you. You had your village, your family, your tribe, and you would succeed and fail together. These days we don't need a tribe to survive. We can get food and shelter by working for money, and our mobile phones love us.... but we actually truly do need a tribe to survive. We're lonelier than we've ever been in our 75,000 year history - and it's bad. I'm really lucky, I pretty much made all my super close friends through work and social groups, I reckon I've got 10 people I can truly count on if I need. I keep thinking back to that Seinfeld episode where they talk about how in their 30s they're not taking applications for new friends anymore... except now I feel like no one is taking applications at all.

This is something my partner struggles with. I've got one super close friend here in the US, a couple of good buddies, and a parkour place and a ninja warrior place where I can go to hang out with friends. My partner doesn't really have that... she's got some close friends, but they're a fair drive away now, and so she doesn't feel like she really has a tribe. She's working on it though.

If you can't think of, say, 5 people who would really help you out if things got bad, then you need to find your tribe. Join any sort of real-life social group or sports team and get involved. These people could literally save your life.

What do you think? Are we lonelier than ever?

Thanks for watching!

C. S. Lewis wrote The Abolition of Man. He discusses the modern move away from culture, tradition, and customs. In classical education you were expected to take stock of yourself and figure out where your place in society was. You were expected to mold yourself to the man who would do the most good for your community, in your own fashion.

Modern tendencies are to shape the world to your wants and ideas. Through government, modern man forces society to conform to his ideas of justice and morality. It emphasizes standardization and conformity such that culture, traditions, and customs are antiquated ideas.

Ah, this might be the most intelligent comment I've ever received.

I agree... in times past it was very obvious what your place was and what your contribution to your local society was. In the industrial revolution, it was less clear... you were in a factory, making a thing... for whom? Now it's so much less clear... you're contributing to 'something'.
