A Small Town County Fair - Have You Ever Been To One?

in #dtube7 years ago (edited)

VIMEO VERSION (In case Dtube doesn't load)

There is nothing like the feel of a small town. Every year, many towns and communities across America come together near the middle or end of summer and show off their garden goods, handicrafts and livestock. These are the producers of America. People who still actually get dirty and work with their hands on their farms or homesteads. It takes work, time and effort to grow a garden or to sew a quilt or to raise a sheep or new calves. These things don't happen by themselves by someone sitting in front of a TV or playing video games.

Most of these fairs go unnoticed by the rest of America in the big cities these days. People have no concept of coming together for such an event. Heck, most people in the major metropolitan areas don't even know their neighbors much less talk to them and get together with them as a community at a fair. But in small town America, these things still happen and its a fun week of show and tell.

This year, An American Homestead received the most amount of points and ribbons for our entries into the fair. As we build upon each years success, it provides motivation on what new additions we can bring for the next fair.

This morning I entered sweet potatoes, okra (Hill Country Red), bell peppers, and peanuts in my county fair. The judging was this afternoon. Don't know the results.

My sweet potatoes received a Second Premium ribbon. My peanuts received a First Premium ribbon and a Best of Show ribbon!

I have not checked. I plan to go Sunday to pick up my entries.

Loved this you guys are great.
Cindy and I love you both and came from yourube to steemit with you.

THANKS FOR JUMPING ON BOARD! I think you will find a nice little community here!

We do and now looking forward to joining dtbe.

My family is at the fair now. Will be posting on it soon.

Great! Come back and post pictures!

Awesome as usual. Really sad about Youtube. You guys had the best homesteading channel there. God bless!

Thanks a lot. Welcome to steemit!

I always love your fair videos. Congrats on your winners. We've had far less to can this year as well because of the weather.

Yeah, we have had much less. Our tomatoes are just not ripening.

Our county 4H fair is held in mid July so there's not much in the way of canned goods. It's mostly livestock, photography, and crochet/knitting. In addition it's usually in the 90s so not a really fun experience. We usually just go to see some kids from church showing their cows and pigs.

Congratulations on the many ribbons.

Yeah, that is kinda early. I wonder why they do it so early.

My guess is because the schools here in Southern Indiana start in early August. All the county fairs are over by mid August. Quite a change for me since I grew up in Michigan where state law says that school cannot start until after Labor Day.

Congrats on all your ribbons!

We are lucky enough to have FOUR fairs that are within 30 minutes driving time (or less) from us, and I love going to as many as we're able to make it to.

We participate in one, which is the last of the four (this year, Sept. 12 - 16). This year we'll be entering 5 of our dairy goats in open classes as well as 4-H for my son. I'm also thinking about entering some hand knitted things I made this year. I wanted to enter my canned green beans but I did all of them in pints this year and the fair book requires quarts -- whoops!

WOW! FOUR! That is fantastic. I would love to go visit the district fair but its over an hour a way and I just can never find the time to get over there. And that is weird that they require only quarts. Never heard that rule before.

Congratulations on all the ribbons! If you have never lived in a small town, it's difficult to really grasp the passion that local folks have for the fair. Steem On Brother!

Yeah some people really get wired over the fair....and sometimes drama ensues. LOL

Small town Saturday night...

Shared to show some of the fun!

Thank you for posting such great content. Glad to see you did so well at the fair.
