Like many others I'd never heard of the proof of keys initiative but it seems a good idea as it'll educate people (as it did me) and stress test the third party holders. Hopefully ensuring they're carrying out their due diligence and good housekeeping etc.
But in my opinion the 'not your keys, not your bitcoin ' adage has always been and remains rule 1.
I'm going to participate by doing absolutely nothing. "Not your keys, not your Bitcoin" has been Rule 1 since the beginning.

Hardware wallets are more safe than software wallets for users who understand how they work
Proof of keys challenge: will not take part. The negative effects are higher than the positive. Cold storage makes sense for personal and professional storage. People can get educated in better ways. --- Really GREAT (big) tie. :-)

The warning of unintended consequences of proof of keys is fine and should be understood in the context of risks inherent in leaving coins on exchanges. I hope people are not leaving their crypto on exchanges.
