Episode 48: Steemit.com – The Future of Social Media with CEO Ned Scott

in #dtube7 years ago (edited)

As you can see from my Steemit.com homepage, I, @ashe-oro, have been on the platform since June 2016. A few months after the Steem launch, I had the pleasure to interview CEO Ned Scott about how blockchain-based social media could change the game forever." At the time, the Steem price was $1 and it also had 100%/year inflation which has obviously been changed now.

You'll see that one of the main purposes of the interview was to dispell the notion that Steem was a "ponzi scheme". Over a year and a half later, it's pretty clear that it's not.

I've included the original show notes from the episode back in 2016.

Today’s guest is Ned Scott, CEO of Steemit.com and the crypto-currency Steem which is a blockchain built to reward and incentivize content creation and social media engagement. Basically it’s a website like Facebook or Reddit, where people can follow others, post content and engage in the online community, but there’s a difference. Unlike Facebook and Reddit, where users only get “good feels” when someone LIKES your post, on Steemit.com you actually get awarded with the crypto-currency, Steem, which currently has a value of ~$1 each. I”ve seen people, like Jeff Berwick, make $16,000 on a single post. Trust me, I was in disbelief at first too.

Now, there are PLENTY of people who call Steemit.com and the Steem crypto-token a scam and a pyramid scheme. There are various reasons why fellow crypto-friends either don’t understand or don’t trust Steem; many of them have valid reasons. Ned and I chat about the economics of Steem and how they created a coin, wrapped in smart contracts to incentivize and build the type of community they wanted to build. Coming from a background of Austrian Economics, I’m dig deep to get answers to some of the most fundamental concerns about Steem and try to find out if it’s actually a scam or not. My conclusion? Well…you’ll have to listen to the podcast to find out.

If Ned is correct, and he’s been able to create a new type of social media platform community that rewards content creators and engagements, then social media has changed forever. That’s no embellishment.

If we can now organize ourselves in voluntary communities, based on a common interest, use a blockchain to permanently store our collective content/information/communications and also reward and incentivize each other to create the kind of content that we want…then we’ve entered into a new era of peaceful Anarchy and Voluntaryism.

I encourage you to listen to this interview with an open mind. Listen to how the blockchain is being utilized and how it is creating value in the communities that we voluntarily belong to and choose freely.

very nice and lovely sharing . Thank you @libertyepodcast and @ashe-oro

you are very welcome. Releasing a new episode this Wed :)

Steemit as a platform has a TON of potential, but it still requires a ton of work and further development to become the leader in the social media space. You posted on this a little while back, about how we can improve Steemit from a functional standpoint.

That being said, the incumbent leaders in social media (Facebook, Reddit, Youtube, etc) won't give up without a fight, especially if they try to use(or restrict the use of) patents to hamper development by what they see as competitors.

It also remains to be seen how the user bases evolve and whether or not the are willing to leave the platforms they've become so accustomed to...

I've found myself spending much more time on Steemit than Facebook lately. I don't think that i'm too abnormal and other ppl will most def make the move from legacy to blockchain social media platforms.

Cool! You keep promoting the ones I haven't listened to yet. I'll listen tomorrow and come back for more discussion. :)

Something to consider when talking about Steem is that Steemit isn't the only platform built on it. The more platforms are built on it, the more demand there will be for those tokens. So, while there are a lot of them, innovation on the steem blockchain is far from complete. With more innovation there will absolutely be more value. The more I learn and think about it, the cooler Steem gets.

I mean, an interface as simple and streamlined as farcebook on the blockchain would almost instantly make the biggest social media site ever irrelevant.

Really great stuff and most of the content are still relevant. It's actually nice to see most of the claims made come true. The sub $1 prices almost feel like a long long time ago.

It's also 100% dummy friendly. That''s always a plus because the https://steemit.com/faq.html could be overwhelming for many people who are just here because Blogger, Twitter etc suck.

@ashe this will be an amazing episode. As a new steemian i have alot of questions about steemit in my mind. I have watched your other videos your adorable

So is this a year old post?

no, the podcast was done ~1 year ago. We are moving all of our episodes over to DTube. Any $ we make on these post, DTube will profit 25% so it helps the community and preserves our episodes in a decentralized nature.

Hopefully your episode will help a lot of new steemians like me. . I will look at your episode and hope to learn a lot.I think this episode as a new Steeiman will serve as a blessing to me. . Thank You dear @libertyepodcast

Of all the blockchain projects I've looked at over the last five years or so, STEEM is the most interesting thing I've ever seen. I think this is going to be the one that works, because it has the power to reach normal people. You don't have to be a crypto enthusiast to understand this stuff. And anyone can theoretically take part. With projects like D-tube and Steemit, you've got a lot surface space that can be hit by normies. I find that truly exciting.

Nice article thanks for sharing keep up the good work and most importantly keep steeming.

Thanks for sharing this post sir .. I am a new user sir... for us, your support is needed much... :)
