Designing models for the real world

This is a scale model of a car that has been designed by teamaustralia member @gyro

@gyro has a background in IT and he's a wizz with graphical design and I have a background in Mechanical Engineering, we both have a substantial amount of experience with electronics & electrical design ect, so between us we believe we have the skills to engineer an all Aussie sports car.

I can't take any credit for the artwork as it's all his original work, all I did was helped with scaling the stl file generated from his model which he designed with Blender to get it to the point where it could be used to print a scaled object. That was a learning process itself because it turns out that an object can basically disappear when it's scaled down, if the wall thicknesses becomes too thin the slicer (Cura) can't print it. so after a few false starts we got it all working and it turned out quite well.

This is a project that's still evolving and eventually it's planned to be a real electric powered car Aussie built sports car. Now we have the equipment to take our designs and ideas from a digital form and bring them into the real world in a physical form progress should start to pick up.

The body is still in the condition it was when it came it off the printer and a lot of what you can see is the support material the printing process produces when it makes the object. It's like a scaffold of sorts so the unsopported parts of the object have some something to be printed on.

We have a few ideas for names and branding etc but we'll probably keep that under wraps until we get closer to a full size driveable prototype.

We had 14 people in the house while this job was printing and the camera was bumped at one stage, possibly by one of the kids squeezing in to have a look. So the camera angle moves a couple of times but it still made a reasonable quality time lapse. The print time for this job was just under 18 hours.

Thanks for reading/watching

Cool.

Gonna put wheels n an engine on it?

I printed some wheels for it yesterday mainly to test the geometry of the steering design but this was mainly to see how the 3D design would look in the real world. There won't be a motor in this one but we are going to build a 1/8 scale model of the same design soon, that one will have a motor.

sweet.
