RECOMMENDED

Thinner and more powerful than ever, the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 mixes a blend of affordability and capabilities.

IN AGREEMENT:

  • Nvidia GTX 1060 graphics
  • Well configured for the price
  • Quick-charge battery
    IN DISAGREEMENT:
  • Some odd design choices
  • Reduced battery capacity

With Nvidia’s Max-Q technology, there has been a recent slew of laptops that no longer have to undermine between thin designs, quiet noise profiles, and extreme graphics performance – the problem is that many of them are not easily affordable.

However, the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming laptop goes a long way to adjust this issue – becoming the most affordable Max-Q machine on the market

You’re getting quite a capable 15-inch gaming laptop equipped with Intel Core processors and an Nvidia GTX 1060 graphics chip. What is more, the thinner frame and new features of this affordable Max-Q design make it “worth looking at”.
Fast-tracking its way to becoming a key player in the gaming laptop space, the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 deserves a closer look at the very least.

Price:
$899.99 (about £899, AU$1,999).

Display:
Our test model of the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 series makes uses of a Full HD TN panel. Unfortunately, the shop page does not specify which display types are used by the given variants. The included data sheet from Dell lists three different display types for this series: First of all, the Full HD TN panel used in the test model, secondly, a Full HD IPS panel and lastly a glossy UHD IPS display. The UHD display is used in the most expensive variant. It remains to be seen whether the Full HD IPS panel is truly used in any variant. Dell has not yet given a solution to our request concerning this matter so far.

Let us turn to the test model's TN panel with a resolution of 1920x1020 pixels: It has an average brightness of 235 cd/m². This is mostly striking as the test model of the Inspiron 15 performed 16% better. In this aspect, the expensive Asus Strix takes the lead with about 300 cd/m².
It is advantageous that screen bleeding/clouding is not recognisable.

When Shadow of war was played, the grass around an orc fortress was a crisp green, but Talion's brown-and-gray cape was muddled, and I wished I could make the screen just a little bit brighter.
The panel on the Inspiron 15 covers 70 percent of the sRGB color gamut, which is very much less than the mainstream average (102 percent), as well as the Strix (113 percent) and Predator (81 percent), which have richer hues. The Legion, however, is duller, at just 68 percent.
On the light meter, the Inspiron's screen measured an average of 233 nits, dimmer than the average (253 nits) and the Strix's screen (297 nits). But the Predator (226 nits) and Legion (220 nits) are darker.

Keyboard and Touchpad:
The issues with the Inspiron's keyboard are as follows:

The first: This keyboard has just 1.2 millimeters of travel and needs a heavy 79 grams of actuation to press the keys, so it was found bottoming out constantly. Typing is not a pleasant experience. It was experimented that 106 words are usual hit per minute on the 10fastfingers.com typing test, but with a 4 percent error rate -- twice the average.

The second: The keyboard is placed and moved too far back. These issues are most of Dell's Inspiron laptops (I'd rather have a slightly shorter trackpad), and when this orders is paired with the shallow keyboard, the experience is just uncomfortable.

The touchpad is 4.1 x 3.1 inches, which is nice but taller than any reasonable person needs. It is plastic, so it doesn’t feel as nice as metal or glass touchpads, but it is accurate when you are controlling and using gestures like pinch-to-zoom and tapping four fingers to reach the action centre in windows 10.

Audio:
The Inspiron's speakers are squarely average. When Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song was played," the Inspiron's speakers filled the lab with sound. The guitars, vocals and drums were clear, but the bass was lacking. In the included Waves MaxxAudio Pro app, turning up the bass did not help, though using the Details dial, a little more detail out of the cymbals were managed to get.

Design
The original Inspiron 15 gaming laptop had a markedly cool design, and it is mostly the same here. This Max-Q version still shows rounded sides with slanted front and rear edges for a completely uniform and amazing look.

Meanwhile, Dell has done something different here in choosing to swap out the soft touch layer on the laptop with a plastic veneer that is less prone to smudges from fingerprints. The geometric grates on the back of the laptop have also been replaced by more cooling vents, but this might have been done in service to the cooling Nvidia GTX 1060.

At 0.98-inches thickness the new Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming is also just a little inch thinner than it’s outgoing, 1-inch tall predecessor.

In Conclusion:
The Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming seems like it is going to be a great laptop for casual gamers, or even to the hardcore gamers who are just looking forward to save some cash. The $899 (£899, AU$1,999) machine is pretty cool, especially for its asking price, with an Nvidia GTX 1060 and a 256GB SSD at the affordable price, making this one of the best deals for a gaming laptop that will be able to play all the newest games at high detail setting with good frame rates.
