DTubeDaily: Tour A Professional Recording Studio
In this next entry in my DTube Daily digest, we dig into my digs ... specifically the recording studio I've run for over a decade that as of late has been forced to divide its time between recording bands and cranking out new content for DTube and DSound! These are the kind of time management problems I'm actually excited about solving, and the opportunities presented on the Steem blockchain are getting me motivated to finally create the modular synth and studio tutorial content I've been previously unable (or unwilling!) to make the time for.
We get pretty nerdy and pretty superlative in this video. After ten years in the same space (that I sheetrocked the walls and laid the hardwood in day one) and twenty years recording bands, I have some pretty pointed opinions about gear. That being said, when you've heard eight or nine different summing mixers and shot out every ribbon that exists as drum distance mics, you end up with solutions that both inspire and make life in the studio easier. Forgive my enthusiasm.
Much love and appreciation to @toddjsmith1979, @vachemorte, @heymattsokol, and @maneki-neko (and the entire @dtubedaily fam) for helping keep me motivated, improving my thumbnail game, and generally being awesome people. I can highly recommend visits to the vlogs of these fine humans, amongst many others. Somewhat soon (and in particular as my SP grows) I'm going to go to at least partially automatic curation . Over the last three weeks I've had five (yes FIVE) bands in the studio, in a row, with hours not days break between. Sometimes life (especially recording studio life) steamrolls (see what I did there?) everything else and wasting potential voting power is not something I'm particularly excited about. Stay tuned for an episode where a fake cybernetic robot programs a not fake not cybernetic robot to vote for deserving steemians and, effectively, give the people back their air. That is precisely the aesthetic I’m trying to create.
As someone who has spent his entire adult life operating submarines, modulars are more confusing. Makes the BCP of an Ohio Class look easy.
Thanks for the run through of the studio. Definitely got some gear envy watching that, but what I love is that you seem to have a good deal of vintage gear and involve it with some more modern modular stuff. I can see why the character of your music is so interesting looking at this.
First: thank you! What a ridiculously nice thing to say.
Second: Working with outboard nets you five or ten percent more inexplicable mojo, at (to begin with) probably 10x the inconvienience (recalls, automation, etc.) Over time ive just tried enough solutions that now -finally- it feels about as seemless as it can be without going to a large frame console which is impractical and uneccesary in all the ways. The ssl sigma at the end of every chain (basically like a synth vac except pro tools automatable) ... complete game changer.
I’ve only recently started to get a handle on my end chain processing, but I feel very amateurish at it. I feel like I’m fairly decent at sound design on a individual sound level, but loose the plot when doing mixdowns. I’m working through it. Don’t quite have the money for the nice outboard, but I’m spending more time learning the Waves emulations and doing what I can. Finally got a modular synth today. Pretty basic, but I’m excited right now.

Nope, purchased a Blue Lantern Evila synth so I'm not quite on that Eurorack level yet. I literally can't find anything online about the synth, but the company moved onto making eurorack a few years ago. Looks like this. Seemed like a way to start down the path. Looks like this.

Thanks for the tour, amazing set-up! Basically compare to you I feel like I am a minimalist recluse musical monk that only drink water and eat berries straight from the trees, if my analogy make any sense? In short SICK set up.
Thank you my friend! It's been a ridiculously long road putting it all together, and were it not my actual business and main source of income, I would absolutely feel guilty/ridiculous to be this deep in it. That being said, as I saddle up to turn another full length's worth of mixing out in four days .... wouldn't have it any other way!
Great in depth video of your studio, thanks for sharing. Looks like you have been at this a while! You have a really nice setup with a lot of really great equipment. Also helps to know people who build things ;-) Have a few things in there Ive had before and totally regret selling, I feel like a damn jackass for selling my SRE555 tape echo..."oh I'll replace that with an H9 and pay some bills" .....wtf
I just stick to Native Instruments Gear, but I respect this guys amazing gear. This guy has definitely sold records!
