Looney Tunes was an American series of comedy shorts, produced by Warner Bros. from 1929 (although it didn't air till 1930) till... well there's been some shorts released as late as 2012 but the series ended in earnest in the 1960's. It ran along with it's sister series, Merrie Melodies, and some related wartime cartoons for soldiers fighting in the Second World War.
A lot of these films fell into the public domain due to failure to renew copyright, because they were very war-related, racist or forgotten about.
