Too much advertising in steemit ! I'm shocked ! 😲

in #dtube5 years ago (edited)

I opened today a few steemit page and I've found really a lot of advertising in it.

Usually we see only one or two banners, but 5 ? It's really a lot.

I just want newcomers when they join steemit to be happy about it.

I understand that steemit want to make money, but with so much advertisement, is crazy I think.

I'm just shocked !

What do you think about this ?

I've been on steem for more than 2 years and I always use steemit to comment and upvote !

Sometimes I clicked even by mistake on those mistakes. How can I be sure that they are not including a fishy website. Maybe they are inviting us to a ponzi or worse, maybe a competitor of steem is promoting there.

I also understand if it was controled by steemit and only approved things will be advertised here.

But, it seems that those ads are from google.

We use to enjoy curating and creating here without those adds, it seems that using only the apps is the solution. I'm just too adicted to steemit.

What if we will see that in our posts in the future ? Are we getting paid for that ? I don't know.

Anyway, I don't want to create drama or something, I'm just sharing my opinion as always.

At least the thumbnail is fun and I'll make you smile. lol

Thanks for reading my posts and watching my videos. ☺

Several times steemit has run away with my processing power.
Running a processor at 100% until i close the tab.

This never happened before adverts.
I do not know what the cause, but i don't like it, and especially since it is a website i need to put private keys into.

Wow, that's really strange. How can they access the processing power ? That maybe even dangerous somehow. I know that if many ports are open ( it's like a way we access the internet ) it's easy to hack that pc. I will make sure that I'm closing steemit page when I'm away from now. Thanks for letting me know.

Basically ALL adverts are javascript.

So, it could be as inane as a bugged do-loop.
It just runs and runs and runs.

It could be a bitcoin miner, there have been many imbedded in adverts, games and even wifi access buttons.

It could be trying to hack my computer, or hack someone else's computer.

You can do all kinds of things with javascript and you are relying on your browser to keep it from affecting your computer.

Not only me. Most steemians don't know about that maybe. It should be written somewhere for public to know. Maybe in faq of steemit. But maybe we already accepted some terms and that's written there and they can't be blamed. But I don't really know. I'm just a regular steemian who likes steem blockchain and creating on it. I understand finally why most old steemians don't like to use steemit. I will do my best to move to dapps like busy.org and steempeak.com.

That could be a problem with your browser or pc, not the Steemit page itself. You should try to run an antivirus or something if you're under windows...

On my laptop under Linux and movil browser (android) I have not a single issue so far...

Under linux i have had this problem 3 times on the steemit page.

That is why i know which thing was using up an entire processor.

As @clixmoney said... We have to try inform about this issue.... Just in case there could be a problem with it.

Don't you mind if I make a post addressing the problem and asking if there was any other people experiencing the same problem? It would be only for the Spanish community... Maybe I could make it notice with one of the admins of @cervantes and reach out the Steemit Inc. people...

I think that will be great. I still see 5 banners in my page now. Really getting me crazy.

OK, it just happened again, but this time steemit was using 50% of my processor.
Not, 46% or 70%, but 50%.

So, that means that some javascript was throttling itself.
Unless firefox suddenly implemented throttling per tab, that is different than yesterday.

Even 50% is a lot I think.

100% for a few seconds is not a lot for a web page with lots of stuff on it.

But, 50% for a minute is not the web page loading.
Nor is it a run-away process.

Yeah, I've seen them on the movil browser.

There only shows one banner at the top. Then I've change the see the desktop version and on the feed, while you browse, you can see how it repeats the same banner every 5 or 6 post endlessly. When you click on a post there are 3 banner, at the top, at the beginning of the comments and if there are several comments it repeats endlessly like on the main feed page.

They're not the big of a deal for me, of course after three years without a single banner it could be hard to see it. And looks like the banner always shows up the same advertisement and the looks remains clean. If they were differents that could be a problem.

Of course you can always direct your friends to a different front end or dapp.

Yeah, I will do so. I will use steempeak now because I like it. I use windows and have an antivirus, but it still dangerous, the antivirus can't always catch everything. We just should tell those who don't know to not use steemit that much. Busy.org and steempeak are the best for comments and posts and other apps of course. I hope apps will not add advertising as well in the future. That will be really crazy.

Honestly, I’m surprised they didn’t do so sooner. It would’ve made a hell of a lot more sense than selling off portions their stake...

Although, it’s a double edged blade there. Them holding less steem means more for us. Them having sold it off and only now putting ads, makes it seem like they don’t have any idea what they’re doing. Why wouldn’t you have put ads in at conception? Or shortly after? Even just 1? Yet it’s being done now? All this time later? Leads me to believe they’re horrible at making financial decisions if something as simple as ads were not appearing until just now.

Just think about how much money they missed out on over the past couple of years by not having ads sooner. Ouch!!

Sadly, I had to turn the adblocker on for Steemit, and I am using Steempeak more than Steemit because of that... I am not against ads and I hate using adblockers, but Steemit is exaggerating!

Yeah, too much ads will make some people leave. Not everyone knows what's apps and how to use steemconnect. Before knowing about all the dapps I spent about a year in steemit without knowing about that, so for sure someone doesn't know as well. I was lost for one year in steemit you can say, it was so hard to grow, the same for some people who are here new, with all the troubles and if they see so much ads, they more likely leave. I hope that will be fixed and when anyone join steemit will be notified about the existence of all the dapps.

Interesting cause I use steemit and I don’t have all these ads I’m seeing and displayed on your computer. Do you have Malwarebytes?
Although I heard you now can get paid viewing those ads. Hence those ads are there. But I don’t have them on mine.

No, of course. Read other comments, people are having the same issue. I don't have those ads with other websites. Why I would show that. It's the truth. Take a look at the video please. It started just recently. I'm sure they've added more ads. I'm sure that I don't have any malwarebytes. Maybe you don't have ads from mobile ? Are you using pc ?

Yes, I watched your video and I’ve read all the peoples comments on here. I’ve also read taskmaster4450 mentioning the ads on his article the other day.

Yeah, taskmaster4450 is really a motivational guy. When I read his post and think that the price of steem will skyrocket. I hope he's right about everything. Sorry couldn't find the article about the ads, maybe it's an old one. Thanks by the way for resteeming my post. ☺ Can you tell me please what was the main idea in his post if you remember ?
