We are in the midst of the information revolution.

If we stop listening to the fear mongering and propaganda launched at us daily, we might find there are solutions to tough situations.

The Entire Earth's Population Could Fit In England.

So I was browsing through the internet, as you do, and came across something that got my blood boiling.
It's actually an amazing fact and something I've come across before but the way it was presented really opened my eyes.

We've heard a lot about how overpopulated the world is for a while now. There's too many people and not enough land or resources. There is however plenty of money, it's just that certain people want all the money for themselves.

The evidence is now in. We now know for a fact, there is definitely enough land for EVERYBODY.
Literally, every man, woman and child currently alive on the planet.

If you took everyone in the world and stood them side by side, it would a cover tiny part of California, which is the most populated state in the US. In fact if you did that in the UK, it turns out you would cover Hertfordshire and a few surrounding counties. Some people may find themselves standing in lakes or rivers but you get the idea.

Now that is everyone contained within an imaginary box of 1m2, which is not convenient for living in for almost everybody, but let's think about space using acres, as that's the usual measurement of land.

Now imagine how much land there is in UK, in acres. There is almost 60million acres.
This is not intended to be a maths lesson as that's definitely not my area of expertise, but if you're struggling to get your head around just how big that area actually is, try visualising 60% of a soccer pitch, 75% of an American football field or 16 tennis courts in a 4x4 formation. If that doesn't help, consider a car park containing 150 cars parked in a square.

As you can tell 1 acre is quite a decent size, but just so we all get a better idea of how much can fill an acre, according to WLT, An acre of rainforest contains up to 86 different species of tree, with the amphibians, birds, insects and mammals that depend on them. Now that is a lot. So how much space do we dwell on in the UK?

Don't know about you but I'm definitely surprised.

Well, if there is so much space for people, why do we insist on cramming people into sometimes cramped spaces on top of each other.
There are arguments that can be made for encouraging people to occupy more minimal spaces as a smaller home requires less embodied energy to build, has lower heating and cooling needs, needs fewer furnishings, takes less time to maintain and requires less work to fund. In terms of carbon emissions small is beautiful. But how small is too small? And how much space is enough?

So what about the rest of UK land?

It should be stated at this point that not every part of the land is habitable.
(of course!)

But of the part we can inhabit, does it really have to be damn expensive. Some of these places we call home are pretty much 4 walls and a roof, but you 'd think each brick costs £100 or something.

We have to agree, the price of buying or renting is not getting out of hand, it already is. With wages barely increasing at same rate as costs of everyday life. Being able to afford a roof over your head has become a real toll for many. Which has been a huge factor in recent political events in the UK.

The purpose of this video was to highlight what an interesting fact everyone in the world being able to fit inside California or Hertfordshire is. But the beauty of the information revolution we have been experiencing got me digging a little deeper and questioning a few established practices like land ownership.
