RE: The Steem Sister Show - Episode 118 // Porn
Young ladies! I'm shocked!
And impressed, and curious and surprised!
Well done on going there... I haven't watched yet, but I have so many opinions on the industry, so I can't wait to see your take! Well done!
Haha thanks! I’ve been asking Mary if we could do this topic for a long time and she finally caved. 😂
I agree with so much in this episode!
I think the working conditions are a real problem... Rashida Jones (Anne from Parks and Rec) has a really interesting series of documentaries about girls who earn really well for their first few videos, but then really struggle, and have to go down a really dark path just to continue earning (most of whom have lost their support networks, in a new city, etc).
I'm kind of disappointed that porn is even a thing... I feel like if we weren't so scared of our bodies and sex, and if society didn't freak out over the nipples of 50% of the population (but not the other 50%) then porn wouldn't be the massive industry that it is.
Totally agree on the lack of story-telling and in-your-faceness... my partner and I once bought a whole porn movie to watch together and it was so ridiculous, and the people looked bizarre that it made us laugh and killed any possible mood. Personally a hot scene in a normal movie is more impactful than any actual porn.
I really worry about what a whole internet full of porn does to younger generations. I've read articles about how teenage girls are more likely to perform hardcore sex acts before they get their first kiss now, but crazy porn gets normalised and teenage boys don't know any different... but I don't hang with teenagers, so I don't really have any insight here. I might be worrying for nothing.
The main thing I disagree with is Mary's point about deleting this if you get famous... firstly, there's no 'if' and secondly, we need actual real celebrities with real thoughts about a range of topics... so I hope when you get famous, your fans can find this video and love you both even more.
Thanks for tackling such a taboo topic! So good!!
My question for the next show is....
"Do you think everyone has a purpose?"
I feel so strongly in my own life about the things I want to achieve, but I know so many people that just kind of : work -> watch TV -> work -> go on holidays -> work, repeat... which I have no problems with at all, but it seems like lots of people either don't have, or don't know their purpose.
I think this is such a great question!! Can't wait to discuss it when we film today. 😃
I don't think that's the reason why porn exists. Porn has always existed. It's all about visual and auditory superstimuli. It's to the sex drive what high-fructose corn syrup is to hunger: a highly processed and somewhat unhealthy way to satisfy our urges. Neither is good for anybody in large doses.
There has never been and never will be a sextopia where everyone is satisfied. The reality of sex can be a pretty harsh place fraught with vast range of difficulties and problems. Porn and its use will always range from the harmless and fun to the pathological. But you're right in that the ubiquity of audiovisual material in our world warrants educating people and the youth in particular much better on the perils of too much porn use.
Oh man... the moment someone invents a high-fructose corn syrup aphrodisiac....
You know, I think you're right. I was thinking that other countries that have far less hang ups about sex than the US probably don't have as nearly a big porn industry. Japan is pretty repressed sexually, and that seems to come out in all sorts of unusual ways.... but you're right in that even countries that are quite liberal and open about sexuality still have some sort of porn industry.
Love, love, love all the thoughtful remarks in this comment! Porn really is a complicated topic and one that is so personalized to each person's experience.
Sorry I'm responding so late... but I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed hearing all your thoughts on this!! You could seriously be a third co-host in this show because you always bring such a good perspective! Too bad Portland and Bellingham are a little too far away to get together to film every week. hahah
