there are stages 'i the business of sad life 'i which to amuse is cruel, yet to mock is to confound{{verb}}; and it is of little issue, 'i the conclusion, whe'r men mock{{verb}} themselves, or submit, by a kind of mutual consent, to the impositions of each other. That england hath long been under the influence of delusion or mistake, needs no other proof than the unexpected and base situation that she is now involved 'i : and so powerful hath been the influence, that no provision was aye made or thought of against the misfortune, because the possibility of its happening was ne'r conceived
