Ambient Sessions [08]

Welcome Back!

It's been almost a month since my last ambient session, and this time I get all movie FX on your ass! For this session, I didn't play any guitar, but ran my Korg Minilogue through my guitar pedals and layered the sounds. It's got a wavy, lost at sea ominous type vibe that I ran with after I created those wave sounds you hear. Everything on this track was created with my Korg Minilogue, minus the bird chirping you hear. That chirping is my own field recording I captured with my Tascam DR-05. Having your own sample library proves to be handy :)

This track is completely experimental (as is most my music), and it all started with that wave sound. I accidentally created it, and will probably use the sound in my percussion in the future. I was quite surprised by how I created this sound and want to talk about it. Lately I've been running my analog synthesizer (the Korg Minilogue) through my guitar pedals. One pedal in particular, my Meteore reverb pedal by Caroline Guitar Company, was responsible for the sound you hear. Not how you'd think though.

I noticed that when I stepped on the stomp button of the pedal, it made this low punchy white noise type sound. On top of this reverb pedal, I also run my sound through a second effects pedal. This pedal is Line 6's M5 Stompbox Modeler (I try to get away from digital pedals, but this pedal features some of my absolute favorite reverb effects I have used on many songs.). A combination of clicking the Caroline pedal on and off in combo with my M5 created this interesting sound, and I had to expand on it!!! Next logical step (for me) was to hear how it sounded in reverse......

I don't want to expose too many of my tricks, but I will divulge this. If you are getting into sampling, never underestimate the power of grabbing a sound and playing it in reverse, and combining the reversed clip with the original one. This is exactly how I created this incoming/going away wave sound. I just played the reversed clip in front of the original. I really liked the sound it created, and decided this would be the foundation for this session. It was time to get lost at sea!

I layered around seven to eight more effects created with the Minilogue that shape what you hear on this track. I was so happy with the outcome that I will most likely use some of these soundscapes in my nearly finished upcoming EP. I fucking love my Korg Minilogue. It has proven itself to be instrumental (haha get it?) in damn near all my music, and is a low cost wonderful first synth for anyone. I am not a piano/keyboard player, but the Minilogue can create some HUGE sounds in anyone's hands. I highly recommend it!

I hope you enjoy this ambient session and the excess of information about it, and as with nearly all my sounds, if there's something here you would like to use for your own listening pleasure or work, let me know! I will gladly send anyone the WAV or MP3 for this, all I ask is you give me credit if it appears in your work. Peace and love steemfam :)
