Abstractions II - Autechre NTS-style VCVRack Modular Experimental DnB

in #dsound6 years ago (edited)

Today's experiment with the VCV modular synthesis rack was heavily influenced by the pretty significant amount of time I've invested of late in Autechre's newest release, the NTS sessions. This completely bonkers, mostly-rhythmic sound design based composition is -eight-hours long, was streamed live to internet radio as a delivery method and as such is loosely divided into tracks more by movement and feel than any sort of melodic progression. It's an incredible deep dive, each subsequent listen revealing new timbres and percussive effect automations previously unnoticed, and it found me at a time when I was aggressively searching out the least melodic, most forward-thinking sonic landscapes as inspiration for my own creations. In so many words, the NTS sessions are like a polished, absolute-top-of-the-game version of what I've been blindly stumbling toward for the better part of the year. You can stream the entire 8 hour monstrosity here: https://autechre.bleepstores.com/release/98703-autechre-nts-sessions-1-4

I can't wait to get back to the studio and start composing minimalist sound design inspired driving music like this. I'm using -way- more sequencers and instances of Plaits in this than my poor laptop can handle, and getting hands on the gear itself is going to be a revelation in terms of orchestrating the coming and going of the various elements. Stay tuned!

Pure inspiration! Man we live in a great time (for the most part)!

If you even somewhat like this, check out the link to the nts sessions and have your head exploded.

Hey Drumoperator,
HUGE thanks man ... EXCELLENT stuff - had me hooked from the first squelching bass note!!

Up-beeped and re-synthesised :D

You should mess around with vcvrack! It’s really deceptively powerful and everything you are hearing in my piece was created live in one take with it! Autechre is using piles of homebrewed maxmsp devices to accomplish similar (but vastly more complex) ends. Vcv is a killer starting point.

Thanks for the kind words and much gratitude for re-synthesization.

I intend to - thanks for the inspiration!
I have been having a huge amount of fun with Arturia V-collection of classic synths. I have used their CS-80 V for years! Their quality is stunning you would enjoy :D

Oh yes. Have also had this suite for a hot second. We used the Arturia version of the SEM all over the last Maserati record ... so much so that we picked up the hardware OB6 (which shares the filter design) ...

Both the Arturia suite and VCVrack occupy similar spaces in my mind... are they as good or immediate? No. Do they get wildly close enough to get an idea if you’d liken the real thing? Oh yes.
