"I Love New Yorke" - from DRUMOPERATOR Original Modular Synth Electronic LP "slowfork"
Musique concrète is a fancy way of describing musical compositions that manipulate snippets of music far out their original context into entirely different expressions. The relatively modern invention of granular synthesis has reinvigorated interest in this very early (early like the 1940s, not 1985) form of musical expression ... and as digital devices beging to allow us to delve into the dna of the waveforms making our music, vastly more sonic possibilities open up than what was once availible from mangling loops of tape.
Meet the Make Noise Morphagene. This is the absolute bleeding edge of where musique concrète meets modern sampling. By recording some minimal piano through my trusty Coles 4038 directly into this wonderful device, I was able to scrub a virtual tapehead around the sample, stretching and unearthing subtle changes in timbre otherwise impossible to uncover. I added a little organ (inspired by one of my favorite minimal indie bands ever, The For Carnation) and arrived at another minimal film-score relevant track that I'm excited to share!
And yes. Kid A was a thing for me. Pun titles are the best titles, although I probably should have chopped up a vocal sample or two for maximum title-based relevance.

Excellent as usual, but all I really want to do is nerd out on how important Kid A was for me as well. Like, I’m not sure if I would be doing what I do now if it wasn’t for that album. Still, love this work.
I shudder to think what kid a timeperiod Radiohead would have done with the tools available now. I thoroughly enjoyed Moon Shapes Pool but man. Kid A hit me just right, and the vocal processing available now via grain splicing...can only imagine what pushing-the-envelope-era Thom Yorke would have done with it.
I always read about how influential Reaktor was in the creation of it and now that I'm more familiar with it I feel like I can hear it's influence all over that record. I remember watching them perform Idioteque on SNL as a teen and seeing Jonny Greenwood messing with a modular synth and being like "What is that thing?" Once I finally start mine it'll be like achieving a childhood dream for me.
That second picture is amazing. I'd love to get my hands on some mod synth stuff someday! Love the sound you posted with it too - so beautiful and glitchy at the same time.
