The Zuliana dance is the musical form that most identifies the marabinos with the rest of the country and is somewhat difficult to accompany.

The Zuliana dance is a rhythm of 6/8 or 2/4 with two periods or parts of 8 to 16 bars and as the old bagpipe says: "only the Zuliano who hits knows how to give". This syncopated rhythm, much less marked than merengue, makes this Zulian air difficult to interpret.

This cadenced rhythm of the Zuliana dance is possible that it has the very marked influence of the Cuban habanera of the middle of the XVIII century and that it arrives to the Zulia by the port of Maracaibo, suffering the transformations between the popular musicians of the region and acquiring own characteristics, appearing later as the contagious rhythm that receives the name of Zuliana dance.

The old followers of this rhythm say that it has lost much of its original form and that today it is no longer done as before.

At the beginning of the century, the Zuliana dance was influenced by the central merengue and by the tango-merengue and when some composer of "la vieja guardia" listened to some interpretation with this influence, he said: "This dance is merengada".

Today there are very few composers, both cultured and popular, who dedicate themselves to composing this Zulian air, so identified with the region. So Zulian dance tends to disappear from our tradition. Only by worrying more, we will keep this popular manifestation alive, otherwise we will have to settle for living from the past and sadly remember the disappearance of this so Zulian folkloric manifestation.

So the abandonment of our composers, the penetration of foreign folklore and the abandonment of ourselves will lead to this musical manifestation so Zulian that it will only be a dusty memory in the trunk of oblivion.

And although I am not a Zulian, here I bring you my version of this Zulian dance with my mandolin.

La danza zuliana es la forma musical que más identifica a los marabinos con resto del país y es algo difícil acompañar

La danza Zuliana es un ritmo de 6/8 ó 2/4 con dos períodos o partes de 8 a 16 compases y como dice la vieja gaita: "sólo el Zuliano que golpea sabe dar". Este ritmo sincopado, mucho menos marcado que el merengue, hace que este aire zuliano sea difícil de interpretar.

Este ritmo cadenciado de la danza Zuliana es posible que tenga la muy marcada influencia de la habanera cubana de mediados del siglo XVIII y que llegue al Zulia por el puerto de Maracaibo, sufriendo las transformaciones entre los músicos populares de la región y adquiriendo características propias, apareciendo posteriormente como el ritmo contagioso que recibe el nombre de danza Zuliana.

Los antiguos seguidores de este ritmo dicen que ha perdido gran parte de su forma original y que hoy ya no se hace como antes.

A principios de siglo, la danza zuliana estaba influenciada por el merengue central y por el tango-merengue y cuando algún compositor de "la vieja guardia" escuchó alguna interpretación con esta influencia, dijo: "Este baile es merengada".

Hoy en día son muy pocos los compositores, tanto cultos como populares, que se dedican a componer este aire zuliano, tan identificado con la región. Así que la danza zuliana tiende a desaparecer de nuestra tradición. Sólo preocupándonos más, mantendremos viva esta manifestación popular, de lo contrario tendremos que conformarnos con vivir del pasado y recordar tristemente la desaparición de esta manifestación folklórica tan zuliana.

Así que el abandono de nuestros compositores, la penetración del folklore extranjero y el abandono de nosotros mismos llevarán a esta manifestación musical tan zuliana, que sólo será un recuerdo polvoriento en el tronco del olvido.

Y aunque no soy zuliano, aquí les traigo mi versión de esta danza zuliana con mi mandolina.
