Reflections

Some will protest at my inclusion of notes before the body of the poem itself, but I haven't been called a rebel for nothing. Besides, this version needs to stand out more than aurally from its previous iteration. Audio links to the recitation can be found at the bottom of this post.

Let us not now discuss the history of the now-defunct train tracks of my hometown whose dismantling has provided me with a few recent adventures, photographs, and inspiration at this juncture. Instead, what of the seemingly paradoxical natures of humanity, which drive us to both crystallize and dissolve boundaries by both terror and joy at turns? And what of the creative hats we don and discard at will?

We depend upon human-issued statutes and regulations for the smooth operation of our day-to-day, yet it is these also which restrict the expression of our innate exuberance and creativity due to their imperfect correspondence with real Law, that of the universe itself. How similar are the ill-fitting labels we place upon ourselves and others as we navigate the world!

Only recently, armed with an upgraded smartphone camera, have I attempted to approach the world as a photographer. Here, as with so many endeavors, theoretical knowledge proves indispensable along the journey towards a skill's refinement, yet mindset is fundamental from the first steps and is the mother of experience's smooth accretion. What does it mean to look at the world as a photographer would? A poet? A film director? A musician? A chef?

In my experience, the common requisite seems to be the ability to experience and transmit wonder through the chosen medium. The imagination brings forth the world-as-it-could-be while the rational self attempts to clearly behold the beauty of the world-as-it-must-be-beyond-the-veil-of-the-sense-organs'-imperfect-apprehension. The two meet, and there is an instant of epiphany; the intuition of some fundamental harmony just beyond grasp emerges, however briefly. False dichotomies dissolve, and the world shines with polarities canceled.

To experience the world as a poet means the realization of the world as poetry itself. As a chef, that passion is the fire whose touch imbues substance with its ability to bestow sustenance. As a musician, that all existence is the most exquisite symphony whose beauty is so great that much of it must remain silent to us that we can operate. As a photographer? That life's eternal beauty spills forth wherever one looks—poignant, fleeting, agonizing in its perfection—and begging to be immortalized by a shutter and a lens.

Bound trees

A planned exclusion of limbs and legions,
sorts, assortments: gems and sequins.

Lines unlighting steps unloof
on sterile paths of proof decayed
osmose soft fear, untruths allayed.

And dreams laid up, and hopes let down;
unravel me sickly and luscious crown.

A thought, a strand, a run-on scene:
demands me taut, and gaunt and lean
to be uncross life lets me in—
where bound trees o'er-extend.

Thanks for the reflections.

It is a fact that people rarely reflect about the fact that our subject position conditions how we see the world and our role in it.

More importantly, we can and usually do occupy multiple positions. Sometimes they crash among themselves, sometimes they harmonize.

To the multiple artistic subjectivities we can add the man/woman, parent, the immigrant, the teacher, the partner, the fan, the mourner...

We tend to disregard the importance of fully embracing those multiple possibilities and apprehending the experience engendered by it.

I celebrate your newly-found photographic self, I too, enjoy photography. Unfortunately I do not have good equipment to capture objects more neatly/accurately, but again, even those notions can be slippery.

Rebellion is a gift of awakened souls, a key that opens doors to intuitive knowledge and of freedom.
But it has always been tried to be tamed, suffocated and extinguished. This is evident in the Bible (SAMUEL 15:23) where it is condemned as a sin:

Rebellion is as grave as divination, and arrogance as the sin of idolatry. And since you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has rejected you as king.

However, you yourself are the overwhelming proof that rebellion is a form of faith in oneself. It opens paths of manifestation to creativity and does not accommodate familiar ways, but creates new ones, with passion, with surrender, always giving the best.
Whether as a writer, poet, musician and, now, as a photographer. His path is creation, not reproduction, and in that, there is glory, @dpend. Well done!

d-pend,

Some will protest at my inclusion of notes before the body of the poem itself ...

No they won't. They'd have to be idiots ... OK, maybe a few then.

Dan, your essay was itself, beautiful.

As a chef, that passion is the fire whose touch imbues substance with its ability to bestow sustenance.

Damn ... I wish I'd written that.

Great insights all.

I listened to the D-Sound version. There's an "electric quality," like a "reverberation," as you recite. I take it that is some sort of production voodoo.

I'd be curious to hear this poem recited in different ways for the sake of comparison. That is, with different pauses causing different prosody.

Dear @d-pend sir!
Continuously composing a good poetry . Where the sun's light does not reach, the imaginary brain of the poet reaches.this skill rarely finds everyone.I admire your imaginative mind..
Life is like a bound tree .there are so many challenge to survive it ,His poetry as a poet is the best medium to express his thoughts and fantasies.
Your best line (the imagination brings the world as much as it may be, while the rational self attempts to see the beauty of the world clearly)

Creators create. The medium is the tool, should not be a limitation to one's creativity

The world is so mysterious and at the same time so obvious that we can anticipate what is about to happen, we can also notice that each step we take is counted by the clock that counts every second of life.

That feeling of freedom or fullness will always be accompanied by man and the laws that have been implanted in us.

Life is magnificent. @d-pend
