Have You Ever Taste Turkish Coffee Before?

in #drink6 years ago

I guess most of you know what is Turkish coffee and what it is taste like. But I am not here to talk about what it is today. Today I am going to talk about how to prepare Turkish coffee!

I came up with this article as my first article because of a YouTube video I saw a few weeks ago. There was a woman in that video and she was trying some of Turkish snacks and drinks. When it comes to the Turkish coffee, she didn’t know how to prepare it so she couldn’t brew it properly. She tried to prepare Turkish coffee like instant coffees and because of that she end up with a really bad coffee after all.

What do we need to prepare proper Turkish coffee?

1. Turkish Coffee
Coffee itself is important. If you're not in Turkey and you don't have much choices to buy Turkish coffee buy any brand you can find but if you're in Turkey you should go to Eminönü (Istanbul) and find "Kuru Kahveci Mehmet Efendi" shop to buy perfect Turkish coffee.

Here is your first trick: After using a pack of coffee for the first time you should store rest of your coffee pack in an airlight container. If you don't keep it in good condition coffee's taste and smell will change.

2. Copper Coffee Pot
Okay, here it comes. I am a young woman but I really want to keep the old traditions of my culture. Nowadays people (especially young and lazy people) use coffee machines to prepare Turkish coffee but if you want delicious coffee you should use copper coffee pot!

Coffee and the pot are the only essential needs. What else we might need?

  • Sugar (depends on how you like your coffee)
  • Dessert Spoon (for measurement and mixing)

Let's prepare!

Water is important!
You should use clean and drinkable water to prepare your coffee.

In Turkey we usually use special cups to drink Turkish coffee and they look like:

It actually doesn't really matter which kind of cups you use but you should care about the proportions for your cups' size. If we use the cups that I just showed you above follow these measures:

Don't put water by your senses! Use the actual cups you're going to drink your coffee to measure water. After putting water into coffee pot don't heat it up immediately. You should put coffee and mix it with water before heating up. For every cup you should put 1 dessert spoon of coffee to your coffee pot.

When you put coffee and water in your coffee put you should stir them at least for 40-50 seconds before you heat them up.

Here is another important trick: use low heat!
I know none of us like to wait for our coffee but Turkish coffee takes time. If you use low heat your coffee will taste much better!

After you start to heat, you should not leave the kitchen. What you should do is wait and stir your coffee really really slowly once in a while. If you stir it fast you will lose all the foam. So be patient and careful.

When coffee starts to boil you are ready to serve them into your cups.

Are we done?

Yes and no at the same time. Why? Because in our culture we never serve Turkish coffee alone.

First step: You should serve a glass of water with coffee.

Second step: This step is not mandatory but if you serve some sweets like turkish delight or chocolate would be a great choice of flavour.

In Turkey when you ask for Turkish coffee usually something like this will be served to you:

Well, as we say: Afiyet olsun!
