Just a tie is enough to keep cartoon characters from looking "naked"

Isn’t this weird? Why does just a tie make such a difference over whether these characters look clothed or not?
Apparently it has something to do with the collar providing enough of a break of “skintone” to complete the illusion of clothes. This was lucky for Hanna-Barbera cartoonists, because the collar made it much easier to animate the head and body separately, and before computers were used to make cartoons, this saved immense amounts of time.
I wasn’t sure if I’d find a good amount of examples of this, but I shouldn’t have doubted Wikipedia, which of course has a comprehensive list of notable bow tie wearers (I’ve linked to the cartoon section).
But really, Yogi has a collar, but no shirt. That makes no sense! Less sense than a talking bear makes in the first place.
