As someone who's completely new to Steem I can say that teaching merchants about the platform is extremely important. It is quite time consuming to familiarize myself with everything and I would imagine that if merchants would find themselves in a similar situation, without help or teaching, they would not be very inclined to make changes to accept Steem.
