Puppy dumping ground identified

in #dogs2 days ago

In Thailand, it is customary for people who have pets that they cannot look after to drop them off at temples. This can be the main reason but often and in many cases, the job turned out to be a lot more difficult than they thought it would be. This is something that new puppy owners or people that are thinking of getting a dog on a whim or as a gift for someone need to keep in mind. So many people have an untrue idea of what having a puppy is like, and they end up overwhelmed by how much attention a dog actually needs and how destructive they can become if they do not get said attention.

When the temples cannot take any more animals, and most of them can't because they are well over capacity, they will put a sign outside the temple telling people to not drop their pets there. For the most part the population heeds this warning but then somehow other "drop spots" end up being established. One of those was discovered by us recently.

While this looks very similar to the last bus stop I posted it is actually a different one. I can only guess that the reasoning behind people dropping their dogs here is that they are going to encounter other humans who are waiting for the bus and the hope is that they will give them food or perhaps even take them home with them. In my mind this is a cop-out excuse for abandonment but at least it is giving the dogs a chance.

You may recall in the past that I told people to not remove puppies from these locations because the mother could be off looking for food for them. These dogs are too old for that to be the case but we still stuck around and checked on them for a few days as well as made inquiries in the region if anyone knew anything about them. We came to the conclusion that they had in fact been abandoned an the rather remote location of this bus stop had them just sticking around there and waiting for someone new to show up and hopefully drop them something to eat.

This was completely unexpected but when we initially put the word out there on our other social media connections someone quickly stepped up and offered to adopt BOTH OF THEM. This is something that so rarely happens that we were just overjoyed since we do not have the capability to provide them with shelter on our own. Our kennels are over capacity and all of our volunteers have taken on at least 2 dogs each.

The fact that we were able to present in photos and videos that they both have wonderful demeanors and are very attached to being around one another lead to some wonderful soul out there adopting them. We will follow up to ensure the dogs have a safe and sound place to live but since one of the references that the adoptees listed on their application is actually one of the founders of our organization, that probably won't be too terribly necessary.

Some have said that by us doing this, if the word gets out, that this will only encourage people to dump their unwanted puppies at places like this even more. While I hope that is not the case I suppose it is better than them just driving them to the middle of nowhere and dropping them off in some random location. At least at these bus stops it is easy for us to determine if they are truly strays or not.

If you have a dog or any other pet that you have determined you cannot take care of anymore I would strongly encourage you to at least reach out to an animal rescue center such as our own before doing so. If their organizations or anything like our own they will work with you to make the best life possible for the pet and they will do so without any judgement. If anyone in the world is aware of how difficult having a puppy can be, it is the people like us that work with them every single day.
