A Dog is more than Man's Best friend...!!

If you're thinking about getting a puppy, you'd better do your homework first. You'll need to think about:

  1. Why type of dog?
  2. Why are you getting a dog?
  3. Where will you get it (pet store, friend, shelter...?)
  4. How much time and attention you can give to a pet?
  5. How will the puppy affect the routines of you and other family members?
  6. Whose will it be? (Often when the kids move out , they leave "their" dog for their parents to look after.

Puppies Grow Up & Up & Older Too.

  1. Your house or apartment needs to be big enough to house the dog as an adult as well.
  2. Keep in mind that some breeds will grow to be quite large.
  3. Remember that having a dog is a long term-commitment.
  4. Depending on the breed, you can expect to have your "Puppy" for the next 10-15 years.

Great post, sums it all up very good!
I have one additional thing you should keep in mind when you think about getting a puppy:

The type of the dog is not just defining the size of it. It also defines its personality and its special needs. A hunting dog for example needs to chase after something regularly. So you have to check if you can satisfy the special needs of the dog-breed you want to get before you get it. Inform yourself and choose a breed that fits into your daily habits.
