Toenail Trimming

in #dog7 years ago

If you've tried doing this before reading this post , you likely made at least one nail bleed by using clippers, and the dog yelped and you became ridden with guilt and fear to do it again, am I right?

You didn't mean to hurt your beloved, but , in fact you did..in more ways than one. They never forget once they've been nicked with their nails. This is because , in fact, it does hurt.

The good news is all can be forgiven with a few simple techniques. Step one is addressed in this post:
Buy a grinder.
There are some cool ones that are for lighter duty and cordless too.
The first few attempts will likely be a bit of a wrestling match BUT after about the third go around, and with the proper loving approach, your Beloved will usually calm down and let you do it.

The best way to begin is having another person to hold the dogs ELBOW. NOT anywhere on the leg. controlling the elbow controls the whole leg. Put your hand behind the elbow and gently but firmly hold. As the dog squirms you are not hurting them but you indeed have control.
(Think holding a child gently but firmly to dispense cough syrup or something like that. They may be throwing a fit but you are in control.)

Next breathe and relax. The dog senses if you are tense or relaxed, and they will mirror your ENERGY!
