The Time It Takes to Fall

I was young when I was told
To love with the mind and connect with the soul
Thoughts of my heart are paintings on the wall
Mother I am a good girl after all

Too long I kept this machinery going
Like stopping the ebb from retreating
Pulling hearstrings til they break
Is it this hard to stay awake?

How long must I fake enjoy this pretense?
Feeling more than this plain worldly presence
Get me high, make real time romances
Oh wait, have I run out of second chances?

It’s been too long; I am forgetting
My heartbeat dreary, feelings sinking
Too tired it’s become from all the thinking
It’s irrational, I know, this fear of falling
