Dead Man's Boogie - Devil Nation

This is the title track for the new album of my band Dead Man's Boogie. The song is called Devil Nation.
I got inspired for the lyrics when I was travelling to China and South Korea:
In Beijing, I decided to try out couchsurfing and stayed for three nights at a shared apartment of three Chinese guys. We had a very interesting conversation and it was great to see how open minded they were, as well as critical towards all the restrictions in their country and their conservative government. We ended up playing songs to each other on an acoustic guitar - they were playing traditional folk songs and I played rock songs like "Rocking in the free world" or "All along the watchtower". Music just brings the people together! During my stay I visited the Tiananmen Square in the city center of Beijing. Sadly, this place got popular for the Tiananmen Square Massacre, an armed suppression of a pro-democracy movement in June 1989. It was disturbing atmosphere: you were always aware of Big Brother watching you due to the gigantic camera installations all over the place. Furthermore, it was explicitly mentioned in your tourist guide not to wear any provocative clothes, like "Free Tibet" shirts.

While travelling in South Korea, I visited the Korean Demilitarized Zone, the border between North and South Korea. Bill Clinton once called it the "scariest place on earth" and the atmosphere was damn spooky indeed. When we entered the Joint Security Area (a kind of courtyard with buildings in the middle where negotiations take place), we were constantly being watched from the North Korean side. Soldiers were standing on balconies with field glasses and we were advised in advance not to wear any provocative shirts as well or make any offensive gestures.
But you don’t have to look so far to the east: Turkey tramples on human rights as scientists and journalists are wrongly convicted and imprisoned, all over Europe the right-wing populism is on the rise and in many countries torture and death penalty is still en vogue. And let’s not even get started with the USA…
So these lyrics are basically my reaction to the world falling apart. Very metaphorical of course, as I have this picture in mind that governments are not run by humans anymore but by demons. And the devil smiles…
