THE AGONY OF LIFE

Sunday's service was awesome as the Pastor announced the thanksgiving in honour of the brothers (soldiers) who returned safely from the Northeast.

The echo of the thunderous clap and the boisterous shouts was deafening when the brothers stood up for recognition and offertory. Just as everybody was singing happily and dancing radically, praising God for the safety and life of the brethren, the good women in my parish church were not left behind. They were full of praise and thanksgiving as all of them were on their white uniform to show gratitude to the Lord Almighty for the safety of the brethren. I reflected.

It dawned on me that while we were full of life and gay, somewhere, a community is mourning their unfortunate son who could not return alive from the same Northeast.

While our friends drove straight into the compound, their son's vehicle entered in a reverse.
While we welcomed our friends in happiness, they received their son in grief.
While our friends came back home running, their son returned lying on a stretcher.
While our friends defeated death, their son was defeated by death.
While our faces beamed with radiant smiles, theirs were writhed in painful contortions.
While we celebrated in eulogy, they languished in elegy.
While we shouted in joy, they moaned in agony.

This is the irony of life.

Birth for death.
Happiness for sorrow.
Laughter for tears
Joy for grief.
Gain for loss.
Pain for pleasure.
