Facebook knows a lot about me - here's everything I found | CNBC

share-with-dlike.jpg

The fact that a mainstream outlet like CNBC published something like this is sort of a news on its own. It also legitimize these issues in the eyes of average masses. Here is a short list of what author dug up:

  • It can recognize my face
  • It knows every ad topic I've ever clicked
  • It has a list of every company that has my contact information from the ads I've clicked
  • It has a list of every contact in my phone book
  • It knows every social event I was invited to and/or attended through Facebook
  • It has a log of every friend I have on Facebook and when we became friends
  • It knows every time I logged in
  • It has a copy of my timeline going back to the time I joined
  • It knows my major life events
  • It knows every video I've watched on Facebook
  • It has old messages
  • It has a copy of every photo I've ever uploaded

Facebook knows some of these things because you have unwisely given such information to FB. But compare that with what STEEM and its front ends know about you. Another terrible thing is the amount of accounts you have made and already forgotten. https://www.deseat.me can help you with that. Give the website a go. I've written about it some time ago for STEEM Hunt.

Hi @vimukthi,

Exactly. This is what is known as data scrubbing and Facebook shares, sells and monetize all the data to marketing agencies and other profiting organizations. This is what exactly happens when we use a FREE platform created by these companies.

The fact about decentralized platforms is that the community and its content creators get realistically paid for what they contribute. Thanks for recommending deseat.me, so I can stand up on my own again! :D

Dear @tysler

I love how responsive you are buddy.

I'm so glad that I had a chance to get to know you lately. You're so very supportive. LOVE IT :)

Dear my friend @vimukthi, i got from @crypto.piotr the link of your post because he is evaluating best writers and i agree with him your choice. Regarding FB i always say what you are writing, it is even a shit that someone can post your presence somewhere without your consent, FB is bullshit!

Other social media aren't that better either. Things like Snapchat also promotes way too much vanity and Twitter can easily get very toxic.

Hi @intellihandling, @vimukthi

It's very kind that you mentioned my name. Appreciate.

FB is bullshit!

I wonder if Steemit Inc. will ever follow their footsteps. I believe it's just a matter of time before we will introduce ads to Steemit and then they will work on targeting ads, which will result in collecting our data.

What do you think?

Have a great weekend ahead,

Piotr

hi @vimukthi

I cannot tell that I enjoyed reading your post as it really saddens me, that we people are being treated by corporations as a product.

As you've probably noticed I shared your post with some of my Steemit friends (I could say "followers" but I dont like the sound of it) and Im glad to see that you're engaging with them.

Keep up with good work. You're creating loads of content which makes it hard to catch up. But I will do my best to visit your blog from time to time.

All the best @vimukthi

Even I got your memo about my post. This is one of the posts I thought of being least likely to get attention. IMO I've produced much better content. Somehow this ended up being my most commented post thanks to you.

Dear @vimukthi

I've been scrolling for like 2-3 minutes through my newsfeed and this particular post actually brought my attention

Funny that sometimes we may think that some post should do very well and attract attention and we end up disappointed. And sometimes we get traffic to content that isn't in our opinion worth it.

Just few weeks ago my partner recorded some silly video with out little puppy dog and uploaded it on her instagram. I didn't think that there is anything great about it. But within 3 days we reached over 100k views and we went "viral".

I then realized that what matters the most is not how interesting or important content is.

The most important thing to consider creating content is: will people have anything to say about it? does it "touch" in any way their lifes? Only those kind of posts are building excitement.

If I would post something about future of tokenization of property market, what would happen? That's a super interesting and big subject. It may change dynamic in the biggest market in the world. And I would think: THIS IS SUCH A GREAT TOPIC.

Would this topic enjoy big engagement? Would people resteem it? I hardly doubt so. Why? For 2 big reasons:

  • most people could not relate themself to this subject at all
  • it doesnt create any emotions

Your post does. So promoting it has been very simple and easy. Simply because everyone have something to say :)

Wouldn't you agree?

Enjoy your weekend my friend,
Piotr

Hi again @vimukthi

Quite a number of quality comment here, right? :)

Cheers
Piotr

Just another reason Steemit will succeed!

Yep. We really are early adopters.

@vimkuthi, I have actually done some research on this earlier this year when I followed up on the incident where Mark Zuckerberg sold facebook data to an advertising company. The whole scandal actually slipped my mind until @crypto.piotr sent me a memo detailing the content of your post. Reading this has brought back some info that I read up on...

I did watch a few hours worth of youtube videos that was about the court session that took place where Mark Zuckerberg was questioned about his actions. It was actually quite scary at the fact that they control so much info and can do just about anything because they have enough money to pay their way out of many illegal activities. I remember so many people were like, "He's and alien" or "He is a psho, no emotion..." and that was somewhat funny. I had facebook for about 4/5 months, but it was only for playing Clash of Clans (for the friend list :D), but I deleted it because my mum posted a few embaressing pics of me and tagged me in them... So I deleted it because that was just so bad hahahaha.

I am a very paranoid person in nature... it runs in the family, so hearing all that happened I was glad that I didn't post anything during my time using the social networking site. I even went through a hectic phase covering my webcam with tape, but then realized a few months later that the government may already have so much recordings of everyone that I didn't bother with the tape.

Sorry for the long comment, but when talking about cyber security, breaches, hacking and regards to user information, I can go on forever... This was a great post, Upvoted and Resteemed :D

Hi @shadown99

I am a very paranoid person in nature...

That must be a bit hard. Im naive and I trust people. I burn myself a lot but I would not like to be paranoid. I can only imagine that life must be way harder.

I wonder if Steemit Inc. will ever follow their footsteps. I believe it's just a matter of time before we will introduce ads to Steemit and then they will work on targeting ads, which will result in collecting our data.

Hey @crypto.piotr
I've actually learnt to live with my slightly paranoid nature :) It's not that hard when your mind is constantly thinking of every possible outcome lol... I have been told by a psychiatrist that I have psychopathic tendencies, but I am not one because I fear consequence... This actually helps in reality because my mind is very calculative so I think of all the possible outcomes to be able to find the best possible way to do something.... So life isn't actually that hard (well to me) because I tend to think a lot before doing anything :)

I would really hope that steemit remains the way it is and they don't introduce ads, because then it will obviously affect us negatively like what happened with Facebook...

Sorry about the late reply, I hope your weekend has been going well :D

Thanks for dropping by @shadown99

I'm so glad that I had a chance to get to know you lately. You're so very responsive and supportive. LOVE IT :)

I actually like long and detailed comments. You'd be even more paranoid if you knew about Facebook's patents. I've covered few of them before:
https://steemit.com/privacy/@vimukthi/special-alert-facebook-files-a-patent-to-turn-on-the-mic-without-your-knowledge-to-spy-on-your-tv-habits-or-does-anybody-know

https://steemit.com/facebook/@vimukthi/the-trail-of-facebook-patents-leading-to-its-atlas-shrugged-esque-end-the-new-tech-will-be-eating-some-profit-margins

The worst part is when you don't add any o your own info but your friends and family tag you onto everything.

That is some scary shit @vimukthi :/

They sure know alotta 'bout me. Thanks for the heads up @vimukthi and Piotr. 👍

That is the reason I don't click anything on facebook and usually don't go there - well, to promote my podcast because that is still where most people hang out. but I have high hopes for Steem and all the dapps that are already on it and soon will be.

This is just creepy... Creepy, and unnecessary! This amount of data collection is just ludicrous and you can’t tell me it improve advertising that much...

It really is creepy @southernwolf

I wonder how many people would feel uncomfortable knowing how much info FB collected about us. Personally I never really cared as I believe that im pretty much nobody. But Im sure there are people who cares about their privacy

Piotr

It does't matter if you are a nobody. There are always ways to nudge people in certain directions by controlling information.

This article has a lot of videos. The last few are very related to what I'm talking about and these stuff were more than 15 years old: https://steemit.com/gaming/@vimukthi/the-genius-and-the-prophecies-of-hideo-kojima-and-metal-gear-the-works-of-project-itoh-must-see-video-collection

Thanks for bringing my post to the attention of a lot of people :-)

This is true. Years ago I looked at how SERPs are different per location (google -.com - .nl -.ru -.de, etc.). Even wikipedia pages tell a different story depending on what language they are written in. I'll have a look at your post. Greetings!

Thank you for sharing this video with us @vimukthi

Im glad to see how responsive you are

Yours, Piotr

Depends on how far you stretch the definition. Getting people to buy or at least click on whatever they put up on the screen to make people buy propaganda will also be considered advertising.

What i really hated was when F-c-book started messing with my feed.

Showing me what they wanted me to see, and hiding things they didn't.
I went out of my way to follow certain things, and it often took a few clicks to get to the information i knew was there.

Next thing i really hate is that F-c-book provides no information.
Like, what is the proper size of your avatar image?
Can't find it on F-c-book.

They banned some of my favorite pages too and some of them weren't even really political.

I had very similar experience @builderofcastles, @vimukthi

Sometimes Im wondering if Steemit will not follow their footsteps ...

yours,
Piotr

STEEM Blockchain literally cannot be censored. But some things can be made harder to access (front end censoring or flags)

hi @vimukthi

Indeed STEEM cannot be censored. But Steemit can. Or am I wrong? I guess this is what you mean as a front end.

Yours
Piotr

It's not all that bad if you're living an open life.
Twitter is too noisy and Snapchat is all fake happiness.

Also while one person complains that Facebook knows too much, another is desperately hoping Facebook can give useful information. It goes both ways.

PS: There are now ways to permanently delete your data from Facebook. Most people just don't bother or won't take the time to follow the steps.

Dear @ulqu3

I love how responsive you are buddy. This platform definetly need more people as supportive as you are.

Have a great week ahead.

Cheers,
Piotr
