- The first step is to gather your materials. You’ll need a large pot, ½ cup of turmeric, cotton fabric to dye, and rubber bands or string to tie the fabric.
- Twist or fold the fabric to create a pattern for dyeing. I folded one into triangles, and then twisted the other two as pictured.
- Rubber band or tie the fabric to secure the design. Use thick rubber bands or tie tightly with string, as small rubber bands will break in the boiling water.
- Rinse your fabric under cold water, which will encourage the dye to spread more evenly.
- Fill a large pot ¾ of the way full of water.
- Measure 1/2 cup turmeric.
- Add turmeric to large pot of water and stir.
- Cover pot and heat on medium heat.
- Heat until the water boils.
- Add fabric and reduce heat.
- Set timer, cover, and boil for an hour.
- Stir and flip over the fabric every 15 minutes to help the dye soak in evenly.
- After 1 hour, remove from heat and transfer to a bowl or container that won’t be stained by the dye. Let cool, or rinse with water so they’re cool enough to touch for the next step.
- Once cool, remove rubber bands, unfold fabric, and rinse until water runs clear (this is easiest and the least messy to spray them with the hose outside).
- Wash and dry – definitely don’t do this in a load with other laundry, especially whites!
